It got canceled because the BBC are a bunch of fucking retards that edited the first couple episodes differently. They thought there was too much background info that most British people would just already know. So they hamstringed the narrative and then backed out of funding when the program flopped in the UK.

The Borgias is good. Some Czech production. The acting is in english and desu isn't done to American taste but if you get past it, its really good.

Thats probably about it in terms of top tier period pieces.

Whoops. I meant BORGIA is the better of the two.

I quite liked THE borgias as well. Both cover it slightly different and THE borgias has better acting and costumes.

I like that BORGIA actually was able to finish the story and was also doubling as a summary of The Prince.

The Knick is a great period drama.

These. Sharpe series is good if you like the period. Shogun is good, if dated. Also check out Britannia, it's worth it for the crazy druid hijinks alone. for sheer fun and awesomeness, watch Spartacus, the first 4 eps suck, power through them.

It was mostly due to the entire set burning down and the cost to rebuild was factored into wether they were going to continue the show or not
