Stana's character found ANOTHER person involved in her mothers death(after arresting the main guy several seasons earlier) and was scared that he'd kill Castle if they stayed married so she split up with him without explaining why and they spent a season separated.
She spent most of the season avoiding being on screen with Castle and partnered up with a hacker who was trying to find the new big bad as well.
Castle started a detective agency and got a new partner(Toks Olagundoye) who was an English former spy turned security consultant.
It was a mess.
