ITT: We post the most pretentious film we have ever seen
I'll start
EDIT: OP here forgot to mention I am a pleb.
I can't think of a film that I've found pretentious. A film that tries something new or makes itself inaccessible does not make it pretentious. Maybe something like Villeneuve's Prisoners with its could be called pretentious, but Carruth, Lynch, Malick etc that are so often labeled pretentious are in fact sincere and anyone calling them pretentious undoubtedly lacks the ability to process art and possesses some insecurity
*with its, by the actual definition, pretentious, empty, heavy handed symbolism
...
The Lobster
...
...
...
...
Upstream Color is the worst movie I've ever seen.
Batman v superman
ITT capetard pebs
The Square
A Quiet Passion
Song to Song
Aronofsky is super pretentious, barring the Wrestler
Aw c’mon, that movie is great
...
Easy, and I haven’t even seen it yet.
synecdoche new york is my real choice tho
Fuuuu forgot pick
...
TDKR
can we please talk about Upstream color? I have to agree with OP. I actually fucking hated it. I've seen Primer as well and I thought that was better.
Fuck you guys I love of all these
The Lobster.
Upstream color was far better than primer imo. Upstream color felt rewarding to pay close attention to, primer just felt like "fuck you, you dont understand time travel" for 60 minutes.
What the hell is pretentious about Upstream Color?
this trash
I love PTA so much but Inherent Vice was pretentious garbage
fpbp
Really? I thought it was easily the best thing he’s ever done, one of my favorite films actually
I loved Inherent Vice. It just feels like a very comfy movie I could always watch. I definitely wouldn't call it pretentious though.
One movie I really liked though was Birdman, but I'll admit that movie felt very pretentious at the same time. But I still liked it very much, mainly for the performances, but I enjoyed the story overall too
this was the most redpilled film that got kubrick killed, fucking shariablue shills. go suck hillary's dick
can't beat that. worst thing i've seen on film, absolute vapid nonsense.
uncle boomnee who can recall his past lives
fucking retarded asian shit
How has this not been mentioned. Also funny games
...
What exactly made Funny Games pretentious?
it's just an 'arty' version of torture porn
>he actually believes that this major film release, seen by millions (billions?) was unable to be stopped in pre production by the supposedly allpowerful secret society that somehow doesn’t have enough sway in hollywood to keep their secrets under wraps. Consequently, the evil secret society must hire shareblue to post on a cantonese stamp collecting forum nearly 30 years after its release to sway public opinion.
Is this the lowest IQ board on Sup Forums?
>ITT people too stupid to understand Carruthkino
He hates discount Leo.
Yeah probably this
>no birdman
shit thread
lars von trier is an absolute hack. melancholia is his only half decent movie. i'm glad no one gives a shit about him anymore. he was memed left and right on Sup Forums for a while when antichrist came out.
dogville was slightly interesting for about 20 minutes and then it goes on for another 2 and a half fucking hours. absolute trash.
2001
The bullshit rewind at the end for one.
Yeah not gonna lie
>The bullshit rewind at the end for one.
That's like, the only thing the movie has going for it. It's been a long time since I've seen it though
It fell into the exact trap it poses to be against; it is media corrupting and controlling and desensitizing violence. I’ll explain by saying one thing the film did really well: it left the characters very blank. There was not much characterization of the good or the bad guys. This allowed the viewer to project their own thoughts onto them and pick a side; perhaps the family is innocent, or perhaps in a way they sort of deserve, or at the very least are hard to feel sympathetic for it. Haneke forces the viewer to pick a side and puts inside of us the very intrigue/disgust in violence that he wants us to examine by doing so.
But as smart as that is, the rest of the film absolutely smothers any room for interpretation. There was the wiggle room to pick a side, but then the film tells us exactly how we should feel once we’ve picked a side. It is so self righteous and heavy handed, cocky but entirely hypocritical. It desensitized violence and “guides” the viewers thoughts in the exact way it detests. Maybe Haneke himself was making a point by making a film that does that. But the film itself is ultimately a failure by its own merit
2 hours of torture to preach the message "religion is bullshit that causes suffering." and "Apostasy is good".
Then it has the gall to ask us to have sympathy for Garfield who at the end became a apostate that helped Japan find/torture more Christians.
Imagine the hate if a movie was set in Spain staring a Crypto-Jew tortured for 2 hours by the Inquisition who ends as a gud boi Catholic that helped find other secret Jew?
nah
this desu
the lady doth protest too much
i would have liked the movie more if garfield wasn't in it. he's awful and has such a punchable face
>pre·ten·tious
>adjective
>attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
Has to be either pic related or Birdman
...
Neither Primer nor Upstream Color was pretentious.
...
i gave up on malick after this. from what i've read he hasn't changed much. it's all the same hand held floaty camera bullshit with whispering voice over crap.
Malick is one of the most sincere directors out there
Malick is one of the least sincere directors out there.
His newer stuff has far less narrative then Tree of Life, so if that’s not for you then staying away is probably the right call
Shit guys, OP here again. Forgot to mention I also enjoy sucking on sweaty, salty balls that have been touched to a pooey bumhole.
yea that's what i figured. if i wanted floaty camera retardation i'd just go watch some shitty home videos my mom made
Shit had me rolling my eyes
imo his style alone evokes a really strong feeling of nostalgia and emotion, like regardless of what’s taking place narratively, he gets this really tangible aesthetic quality. But it certainly doesn’t work for everyone, and the voiceovers are sort of a double whammy for those same people
Garden State. I feel like that might be a bit before the average posters time here, but that was the king pretentious.
>Maybe something like Villeneuve's Prisoners
How the fuck could anyone reach that conclusion
i realize that, but it gets boring fast. he's been doing it since the new world, and to a lesser extent in thin red line. i havent watched anything he's done after tree of life, but from the trailers it just looks like the same type of stuff and i just can't be bothered with dumb intelligible whispering and frolicking anymore.
>symbolism and religious references for the appearance of depth, moral ambiguity and violence for its own sake
The film brings absolutely nothing to the table, nothing to think about, but it still stuff a bunch in there to appear more than it is. That is the actual definition of pretentious
...
Each film since The New World, and especially the last three, have pushed the style further in further. And admittedly I think it went too far in Song to Song. Knight of Cups had it nailed and then Song to Song actually started reintroducing some narrative, but contradicted it with that fragmented style at times. But it is a very unique style that serves a pretty unique purpose, so as someone who likes it, I see it as very understandable that he would take the time and apply it to different relationships settings (a couple, a single man, and a trio respectively). Each one shifts the style a little and the narrative a little, but more importantly the setting a lot, so while they are all kind of circling the same point, the focus on different aspects. So each may be imperfect, but all together they form a sum that is incredibly beautiful and vast
I tried watching this twice and couldn't get through it. This has only happened to me with a few movies.
>mfw Birdman is actually one of griffithfags fav movies
nice bait, faggot
sage
First you have to define pretentious and why you find it a negative quality. Second you have to establish why you find the film pretentious and the negative aspects of that pretension when pressed upon the viewer. Good luck guys
yea i'm not really into the style itself at all, it's ok in short bursts like what he does in thin red line, but any more than that it just gets eye rolling for me.
he sort of turns the camera into a spirit that drifts along with the characters, i think i dont like it because that makes me feel trapped and unengaged with what's happening. idk
came here to post this. holy shit i wanted to punch myself in the face after watching this pile of shit. hated it more than blue is the warmest color
blue is the warmest color was fine to me, it just went on way way way too long
I remember essentially nothing about it other than enjoying the soundtrack a good bit.
Anything from Penis Villeneuve
This
Its fucking shit
>lol Ill watch my wife eat pie for 10 minutes then throw up
>lol Ill wave and have a lolrandums converstation with a nother ghost through subtitles
That makes a lot of sense, I never really thought about it that way. It doesn’t really give you anywhere to go, you have to go exactly where the film puts you. That could definitely be off putting. You just kinda have to submit to being that spirit, stop looking for things or places to go period and just feel and move alongside those in the film. Not that that’s something you can just choose to do, but it is, I think, the mindset required for enjoying that style
What was it like for JLaw to fuck a fedora that pretentious?
...
This so hard
>an existential comedy from the director of three kings
this
plebs
>...
My friend recommended this to me recently? Is it that bad?
I thought it was pretty good. I don't think it tried to be that deep, so i wouldn't really call it pretentious
the most pretentious movies are capeshit, and kids movies, which adds to their dishonesty.
Think about it, they pretend to have messages and morals. but 99% of the time the solution to the heroes problem is to swing his lightsaber or use his rockets boots. Then they tell you he did with love.
Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain.
I'm le actor.
Now gib oscar
Second this.
back you go
If this is too obscure feel free to substitute Tarkovsky's The Mirror instead.
I've been watching my way through the BFI Top 250 for 2012. Been loving most of it, but I just can't get into Tarkovsky,
you forgot that he also impregnated Rachel Weiss and insecurely watched her bare ass get filmed by pic related. is Rian Johnson low-key our guy?
its maximum reddit
you posted it, couldn't even get a good fap out of it
Has to be b8.
i'll say that upstream color is better than that POS screenplay he never got made. Unfortunately it's such a self indulgent piece of garbage it alienates any desire to actually try to understand or relate to it
