Alien for me, it's one of my favourite movies. The Thing is fantastic as well but I guess it's just a matter of personal taste.

This might be the only case of which is better that I can’t decide.

Alien has way better production design, creature design and music.

The Thing has better characters, plot and tension.

I prefer the Thing, but Alien is a better movie.

I don't think Thing could assimilate xenomorphs. In fact that could be why the Engineers bred their monsters with acid blood, maybe they had a run-in with a Thing?

Alien and it's not even close (though I really like The Thing). The scene of the crew discovering and exploring the derelict craft is one of the most stunning moments in horror/sci-fi for me.

they put children in spacesuits for this scene to make the set look bigger

This, effects and sets were better in Alien while some scenes in The Thing have definitely aged not so well. And yet I still like The Thing more.

That is a great scene, but I think it's also rivaled by MacReady and company discovering the alien spacecraft in the ice. Another great scene is when they discover Blair (as The Thing) has been trying to construct a spaceship from the vehicle components.

Me and as I see also a majority of people here enjoyed "The Thing" more.

Never saw alien but I don’t think anything will ever top the thing. I typically have a difficult time picking a favorite anything but the thing is my undisputed favorite horror movie

Both are honestly my favorite movies. The thing had tension and paranoia that built up, but the derilict spaceship scene is unmatched for its truly alien feeling. It’s hard to say The thing and the Alien are both unique monsters, and you don’t know if the creatures are acting on instinct or sentient. It’s hard to pick But I would say The Thing. My mom rented it for me when I was 9 and it scared the shit out of me.

Aliens is a grossly overrated movie and is honestly quite an offensive slap in the face to fans of the original. It's a fun movie but it's not kino. The Thing and Alien are legit two of the greatest movies of all time. Aliens would fall somewhere around Matrix tier.

Because with better technology and a bigger budget, a competent action director like Cameron could capitalize on both the science in and horror of the Alien universe.
Is it derivative? Only in the sense that it borrowed the monster. As regards the implementation of future military technology Cameron was masterful. The horror element escalated as well as Cameron explored the hive mind of the Aliens and the horror of a brood queen.
10/10 Cameron.

I'm personally more fond of The Thing, but Alien is a great movie too.

I'd go with Alien personally because the characters stand out far more for me, plus I love the space exploration stuff.
