The Shadow having a certain control over animals actually comes from the pulps, even though his psychic abilities were far less used in them.
Although in The London Crimes he uses a special hiss to do it and put attack dogs under his command and it would have been cool to see it here (then again Snyder probably hasn't read any of the pulps).
If I'm not mistaken, at some point he actually had, or was supposed to have, a dog sidekick, although I can't remember where this was brought up.
The Shadow lived through every superhero cliche, even a kid sidekick (Shadow Jr in a 40s comic series), I'm sure there's a dog sidekick somewhere.

This is why The Shadow doesn't have a proper rogues gallery apart from Shiwan Khan and the Voodoo Master (and technically Benedict Stark and The Wasp even though they died in the pulps and rarely ever appeared again)

It's pretty stupid of them to try and once again have Batman justify him sacrificing himself to save The Joker with a "his life matters too", and then immediately in the next fucking page we see how The Joker being alive led to a massacre of a police station.
