>Speaking with Collider following a screening of the movie, Johnson explains his stance on the subject. "[There was no debate of showing Han Solo's funeral], just because pacing-wise it didn't have a place," he says. "It's tough in Star Wars because I always think about the mourning that Luke gives to Ben's death, which is all of four-and-a-half seconds before, 'Come on kid we're not out of this yet' and then boom, you're into 'Yay, woo-hoo! Don't get cocky!' There's the moment for it, but it's not long. We don't have time for our sorrows, commanders. That's kind of the thing of Star Wars; you don't really linger on grief because you’re moving forward."
>Johnson's not wrong. With so much happening in The Last Jedi, pausing everything for a memorial service would have halted the movie's forward momentum. Still, the director points out that there were small moments in the movie that showed the grief felt not only by Han's death but the state of the galaxy in general.
>"I think we do it a little more in this movie than typically is done," Johnson says. "I really held onto that moment of Leia before they come out of hyperspace, just that moment of feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders."
Seriously, when the fuck are journalists going to shut the fuck up about this movie? It's been months and they're still writing all these articles jacking off Rian Johnson and saying "Wow that's so true, I guess all the haters are wrong and this is a great movie!" Nevermind that they keep coming up with these strawmen that are never people's actual criticisms of the film. Was anyone complaining "Man I wish Han Solo had a funeral scene"? No, we're complaining about so many other things that I haven't seen a single response to. Like the handling of Rey, the undoing of Finn's development, the pointlessness of Luke's death, the lack of explanation of anything about Snoke/the First Order, the lack of any real worldbuilding...
I don't know why he even bothers. Everyone will throw TLJ under the bus when it comes time to defend Ep IX
Nathaniel Hill
>Johnson's not wrong. With so much happening in The Last Jedi did we watch a different movie?
Daniel Reed
I just can't get over how we're 2/3 of the way through this but it doesn't feel like much has happened. The Last Jedi wasn't even that bad. But what was even the point of it?
Kevin Morales
I actually saw a black man say that the last jedi was too intelligent for the average star wars fan.
Levi Ramirez
Are we using DCEU analogies now?
Josiah Lopez
You sure about that? I've seen more praise for TFA in these past few months than I have in the two years preceding them. Even people who hate TLJ have been going "Well TFA was pretty good at least." I mean, no, it wasn't. I can't decide which was worse. TLJ, to its credit, did not have the audacity to retread the fucking Death Star a third time, but it did pretend to be more daring and subversive than it really was while playing it safe and adding jack shit to the story. Then again, a lot of problems with the universe in TLJ were created in TFA. However, it still does not excuse TLJ's unwillingness to take any real risks nor the fact we learned basically nothing new. So both are enormous shitheaps in their own ways and yet people are trying to pretend TFA isn't one.
Cooper Cox
The effects of Soylo, as seen in the trailer, make The Last Jedi already look bad.
Evan Ramirez
>we couldn't do it because it would fuck up the already fucked up pacing of this movie. >and this is a good thing... they need to stop.
Kevin Bailey
Disney had shills all over putting up bogus complaints so these rags could address those instead of the real hard knuckle reasons.
Nathaniel Roberts
>Seriously, when the fuck are journalists going to shut the fuck up about this movie? When they have to switch gears and do the same damage control for the Solo movie
Oliver Brooks
most people thought tfa was fine, a bit lazy, but competent from start to finish.

Adam Perry
TFA just looks good in comparison. That's how awful TLJ is. It's just that TFA is the most recent Star Wars movie the average person has seen. Go back and watch the prequels after seeing TLJ - they look like masterpieces.
Josiah Cox
>tfw too intelligent to win the election
Matthew Gutierrez
People will speak more harshly of TFA as time goes anyway. As a stand alone the movie its barely works, which means its dependent on the sequels
Bentley Sanchez
>reviews are in
Eli Sanders
no they're still shit, tlj being bad doesn't change that.

She was though. Hillary Clinton had too much experience and knowledge in politics to be President. Americans want a total clown in office.

>>Johnson's not wrong. With so much happening in The Last Jedi, pausing everything for a memorial service would have halted the movie's forward momentum
Yeah, better to halt the momentum to shoe horn in communist bs than have a funeral for one of the most beloved characters of the series
Chase Morgan
>It's another fucking alien with wide-set squinted eyes and a droopy face

The mere fact that he feels this is necessary means he knows it is shit. You don't go on an apologetics tour for a good movie.

TFA is worse than TLJ, and a lot of TLJs faults were Rian trying to correct for some of the stuff in TFA. I mean TFA is the reason we had Empire 2.0 run by Sidious 2.0 - Rian was right to kill off Snoke, but it should have happened in TFA. I just wish there had been some kind of plan instead of JJ setting up his mystery boxes and running off to let someone else make something out of them.
Blake Ward
I genuinely believe they're going to throw Solo under the bus since it's not a "main series" movie. Just like Rogue One they're going to pull the "not as good as TFA" line.
Jacob King
>Was anyone complaining "Man I wish Han Solo had a funeral scene"? Was going to type this myself. I know nobody who liked this movie, and literally none of them have said that Han Solo needed a damn funeral scene. In fact, most of them dislike the fact that it follows directly on from VII at all, it's the first Star Wars episode not to follow an episodic format and pick up a couple of years down the track.
Nicholas Morris
No one doubts that half the country hates Donald Trump. Rian Johnson and his legion of journalists refuse to believe anyone disliked TLJ and the poor reviews are from anyone but trolls and Russian bots.
>Trumptards too stupid to realize the true and the inevitable This just in
Jordan Sullivan
That's mega irritating. I might be willing to accept that the First Order got powerful after a time skip that let them take over the galaxy, but the Resistance literally just took down their biggest base and they don't seem to care.
Jack Walker
>politics is just like the moovies
William Johnson
People only thought TFA was fine because they had not seen a Star Wars movie in years, if they had even watched a Star Wars movie at all before TFA. TFA COULD have been good if it had focused on Finn, who was an interesting character, but instead the main character was Rey, a bland and terrible character who would have been awful and boring no matter what gender she was.
Benjamin Butler
The more Johnson defends it the more it makes normies realize there's something wrong with the movie.
Angel Bailey
Are you guys still on this nonsense? >O-our election was hacked. >How? >Retweets

Joshua Wright
Assuming you meant TLJ instead of TFA, to be fair that is true of ESB and AotC as well. ANH and TPM stand on their own but their sequels do not. TFA, however, does not stand alone either, because it relies so heavily on OT nostalgia.
Chase Garcia
Unfortunately not. People trust entertainment journalists blindly and so they're allowed to shape the narrative.
Caleb Torres
Ahhhhh yes The foresight to not campaign in the Midwest and just assume everyone there is just like the Democratic elites and their pawns in Chicago was the thinking woman's elite strategy. That fake dossier would never come back to bite iether. Tactical genius.
Brandon Davis
This is getting sad and embarrassing.
Austin Adams
This shit's fucking funny. If it's such hot shit, fans would do all the defending necessary. If he was really confident in his vision, he wouldn't be so afraid to let it stand on its own merits.
But every day he further proves what a colossal retard he really is.
Dylan Nelson
if there is one director in 2018 who should seriously consider to shut the fuck up about pacing, it's Rian Johnson. TLJ has no pacing whatsoever, the movie feels like it began just after TFA and ended 2 days later. It's mind boggling that this idiot dares talks about pacing.
Blake Jenkins
Trust in the media is at an all time low. People are no longer consenting to their regularly schedule programming.
Nathan Ramirez
The fuck do you mean "fake dossier"? People have started to admit it's true.
Logan Peterson
D-Did we break him, bros?
Carson Parker
>If it's such hot shit, fans would do all the defending necessary. Like Donald Trump? Oh wait.
Kayden Walker
Hi it's me, the guy you replied to. To be fair the "hacked the election" line is bullshit but is also merely lazy and incompetent as opposed to malicious twisting of the facts.
Everyone knows vote counts were not changed electronically. However, potential Trump voters were microtargeted by Cambridge Analytica (possibly in a joint operation with Russian cyberoperations) and Hillary voters were targeted with information designed to dissuade them.
I was laughing when Trump won. Fuck Hillary, I couldn't give less of a shit about her.
>muh source Do you read? Do you go on the internet? Complaining about one source at this point is such egregious cherrypicking that I can't even be mad

The audience knew Obi Wan for a couple of hours. The characters had known him for maybe a couple of weeks. Both the audience as well as the fans had known Han for forty years.

Nicholas Thompson
Its true that many people looked at TFA more positively, but those were mostly detractors because they hated TLJ more. I referred more to people defending TLJ now will definitely throw it under the bus soon.
It will work like this. Disney will attempt to fix the issues the previous movie had the same way TLJ set out to be unlike the OT like TFA was. The Last Jedi defenders were quick to denounce TFA was cliched and too samey to defend this movie, and ironically, they themselves defended it previously from accusations of being a copy. We are talking about people with no integrity that will stand up for whatever is new and hip. I will be honestly shocked if they denounce Episode IX, because it will definitely try to fix the issues left by TLJ, how it will do is a fucking mystery because its unsavageable at this point.
Camden Walker
>the cognitive dissonance on the lost because muh russians narrative is just wew la Holy shit, this Trump voter just had a stroke
Ryder Anderson
I love how the just conveniently forget that it was Johnson who wrote this pile of shit, so he was the one to decide exactly what was going on and how in-depth it would be shown.
So instead of anything impactful, we get an utterly insipid twenty-minute PSA about animal cruelty and tbe evils of war profiteering. But at least we made them hurt, right?
Sebastian Mitchell
>literally no evidence on a Russian hack whatsoever except screaching libtard mobs which isn't even evidence >"hurrrr Trump supporters are stupid!!!"

Joseph Fisher
>the two most powerful nations on earth have an epoch changing secret alliance in order to buy a few thousand bucks of twitter bots
Connor Edwards
No, the Republic apparently completely ceased to exist, because as the opening crawl informed us, "The First Order reins," because the entirety of the Republic was concentrated on those five planets, no other bases, no other government functionaries, no system militias, peace-keeping forces, or system-based, locally-funded military of any kind whatsoever, because these new movies are being written by barely functional retards.
Evan Carter
People shit on the EU because they hate the idea that there's more to the Star Wars universe than the movies and that they actually have to do some work to learn about them, but the Legends New Republic was so much more competent. Leia actually got to be Chief of State instead of remaining as a general for whatever stupid reason.
Owen Russell
>>Hey guise look at this random Candian Mayor in Toronto HAHAHA :^) I have literally no idea what the fuck you are on about.
Elijah Hughes
Here you go.
Michael Sullivan
Strange that when all of the senators from various systems sent to represent them are mercilessly killed, nobody seems to care enough to come to the aid of the Resistance.
Elijah Edwards
What's REALLY strange is that the Resistance expected people to make it there in a couple minutes. It's shown in the movies that even hyperspace travel takes hours. What the fuck is this "No one's coming :(" shit after waiting less time than it takes for a fucking pizza delivery?
Jose Martinez
This is because Johnson is a retard who might be OK if all he has to worry about is human drama like he did on Breaking Bad, but he has no business within 12 parsecs of anything even tangentially related to sci-fi. He simply doesn't have the brains for it.
As Exhibit A, I give you Looper.
That real-time/cross-time amputation scene was the single dumbest thing I'd seen in a sci-fi movie right up until the Holdo maneuvre.
Aiden Sullivan
Is this guy EVER going to just give it up? I can't remember the last time I saw a writer/director get so obsessively defensive that he's explaining every choice in the movie. I've seen directors talk about aspects of the movie or answer audience Q&A but come on, it's two months old and you're still insisting you did the perfect thing? It's just sad.
Noah Wilson
I think it would have made sense to end Force Awakens with it. It doesn't make sense to have a funeral scene in the movie after the death. Save flying off to see Luke for the start of TLJ which also allows for a small time jump.
Mason Richardson
Oh my gosh I hated that scene so much. I never see anyone talk about it so I thought I was the only one. You're probably right because I vaguely remember The Brothers Bloom being pretty good (though it's been a very long time since I last saw it) and that wasn't sci-fi at all.
Ryder Hall
