Meth also would punish his “inside the game” co-workers for perceived slights from his “outside the game” co-workers. So Meth Damon is already setting up a back & forth connection between inside the game and outside game. Once that back & forth has been established and he knows those “copies” can think and act on their own, the rules of that universe allow for all the characters to engage each other in conflict on both levels.

I don't think even the average channer can identify with the awkward antagonist in this episode. Still, he wasn't actually harming real people.
It's obvious at this point in time that he was able to put clones in his game with the exact memories and experiences as the real people. These clones also are able to feel pain an couldn't even tell if they were clones or not. This means that these clones had a conscious and torturing and tormenting any being with a conscious is evil and should be punished.
