Kaa being a hero in the book may be stretching it. It was a bigass snake that nobody wanted to mess with and that Baloo and Bagheera recruited by saying that the monkeys insulted him because it was the only thing the monkeys were scared of. And even then if it wasn't for Mogli it would have eaten both of them with the monkeys.
It was a pretty neutral character.
