I have a family and friends that have worked at lucasfilm for a lifetime. No one will believe me "my dad works at nintendo too" but since disney took over its been better and worse. Better in a sense there's work to do and people feel a real sense of job security that no one has had since before indiana jones 4 finished. Worse in that the direction and suggestion and overall image feels boring. Creativity is gone. The art department has been heavily neutered and needs to incorporate "iconic star wars elements" and so on.

I fully believe Disney mandated and forced Rian to include certain elements into the movie. Phasma, AT-AT like vehicles, something similar to hoth, a love interest and so on. He didn't get to steer his original story, he had to include things in it and make a story out of it.
