This, early South Park was pre-Family Guy, so they sort of had to do their own thing (with respect to the Simpsons). The early seasons have a sort of innocent anarchy to them that disappeared as the characters became more fleshed out.

No. The first three seasons are the best South Park has to offer. IMHO, Early SP was great because it wasn't trying to be something spectacular, it was just a shitty cartoon with toilet humor and swearing, which, for the time, was new and uncommon.
