Anyway Vikings is a rare show where it is consistently good season after season, but yes just like you said OP, the producers trying to shoehorn in modenr feminist politics into the show makes a weak point.

Vikings a very cartoonish, exaggerated, neo-pagan depiction of Viking history. If you watch that show, it's best to confine yourself to the fiction it portrays, as opposed to the historical reality it mimics. Shieldmaidens were not even really a thing outside of myth and lore.

That varied by region. Scandinavians iirc had better diets than Britons and Anglo-Saxons during that period, so it might not have been so unusual for Scandi women to be 5'7".

I agree with your assessment of the show, but based on accounts from Byzantines who found female bodies among dead vikings after a naval battle, it seems likely that they did bring women along in some capacity. Not as front line soldiers, but I wouldn't be surprised if they dressed the camp follower women up to look like soldiers to trick enemies into thinking they had more guys than they did.
