Hickman confirms Marvel are petty cunts about Fantastic Four

>At ComicsPRO this year, Tom Brevoort was still doubling down on the sales explanation for the continued non-publication of the series. But in the Newsarama article, he is directly contradicted by Jonathan Hickman. Who seems to accept the explanation as very plausible indeed.

>George describes a “somewhat surprising lack of Fantastic Four – Marvel’s literal first superhero family” which, if he’d googled once, shouldn’t have been a surprise. And quotes Hickman as saying ”I think it’s pretty common knowledge at this point that Marvel isn’t publishing Fantastic Four because of their disagreement with Fox.”

B-B-B-BUT Marvel Rebirth!

>”I think it’s pretty common knowledge at this point that Marvel isn’t publishing Fantastic Four because of their disagreement with Fox.”
FINALLY THEY COME RIGHT OUT AND SAY IT!

i'm not really sure hickman realizes that there's a big difference between being "pretty common knowledge" and having writers outright fucking confirm it

Man, I wonder if people will actually care now.
Who am I kidding, nobody actually seemed to give a shit before.

We needed someone to confirm that? Not to get snooty or anything, but it was always pretty obvious.

That said, it's pathetically sad that a publisher will outright refuse to publish one of their big name IPs solely because they can't make a movie with it.

Even comic book companies don't give a shit about comic books.

I'm sure he knows. But with the way Fan4astic and its related projects flopped, why should he bother to keep up the ruse? Brevoort shouldn't even give a fuck (although I'm sure that he will).

Which is fucking stupid
Marvel comics has nothing to do with Marvel Studios.
It's like this loser guy trying to look cool to the big and cool boys

You people wouldn't even know we cancelled Fantastic Four.

The same reason on why they are doubling down on the legacy shitters, Marvel can't be ever wrong.

I'm gonna need a source on that quote.

brevoortformspring.tumblr.com/post/107985570613/or-any-new-licenses-no-spotlight-on-x-men-or-f4

>If the news didn't report on it you wouldn't have even known
Marvel and their employees are such despicable people.

iirc he was saying "you wouldnt have noticed we removed the xmen and f4 characters from shirts if it wasnt on the news"

He's not wrong. Nobody gives a single solitary fuck about comic books.

And frankly, it's hardly surprising.
>legitimately toxic community
>shit business practices
>lack of genre variety
>little to no accessibility
>comically incompetent editors desperately trying to be writers
>childish or outright insane writers
>seriously, fuck comics fans, they are every bit the vicious, entitled, sub-normal scum the media likes to portray them as
It's just an utter fucking mess.

It's gotten to the point where comics only really exist anymore to be the foundation of other media. Goddamn.

I read it, there's just one glaring problem. People noticed anyway.

>heh, comicbook readers amirate?

Honestly this. Actual comic fans are a group of no more than 200,000 people, and it's just vile these days.
But you're on Sup Forums, why the fuck are you here if you didn't already know this?

Did someone who reads comic books hurt you or something? Or did you read one,get a paper cut and then developed an autistic hate for an entire industry?

>Legitimately toxic community
That's partly true, but I don't think that's a comic book issue.

>Shit business practices
True dat.
>Lack of genre variety
Ehh I think that's only capeshit, but his point still stands.
>Little to no accessibility
This I like, but also just a capeshit issue.
>Comically incompetend editors desperately trying to be writers
This is more a Marvel issue. See DC's Peter Tomasi.
>Childish or outright insane writers
Also a Marvel issue.

He's not wrong. He's right to different degrees about everything.

>Kate !MARA.QPFVA
who

I've transitioned.

Just ignore them until they take the name off

Jeff Lemire totally wanted to write an FF book before leaving marvel and they said no so DC gave him FF pastiche.

Screencap this

A tiny percentage of the people who bitch about the lack of FF have ever actually read any FF. Most of them are just offended "on principle," despite most of Marvel being such a shitshow currently that I have no idea why you'd want them around to be shit on by Slott or Bendis.

Not defending Marvel, just saying that Sup Forums really does not read comics. To me a casual is someone who likes the idea of something and wants to talk about it but doesn't want to put any work into learning about it.

Brevoort's a company man who does not criticize his company's policies in public.

The guy edited FF for over a decade (FF, Avengers and Captain America seem to be his preferred franchises to edit), there's no way it was his decision to squash them, but once the orders come from on high he pretends it's all all right.

Sup Forums is my regular haunt for comics "discussion". Of course I hate comics fans. Seriously, you "people" make me ashamed to like this medium.

most of the people who bitch are xmen fans, because this proves the disagreement with Fox is the reason for everything they had had, and have to endure.
Marvel accuses them of being lunatics who believe in conspiracy theories.

also, the number of people who browse Sup Forums and used to buy F4, must be much higher than the people who have a weekly Carol Danvers thread. it is not like Hickmans F4 was obscure.
I expect many posters here to have read (perhaps through storytimes) 60s F4, Byrne, and Hickmans.

>you "people"
You're literally no better than us.

I used to have a lot of respect for Brevoort as an editor, but his behavior in recent years has been contemptible.

A lot of us have read Hickmans Fantastic 4, and some of Kirby's but not much. We just haven't read other stuff

user, are you saying that because other people who you disagree with over how they act share a hobby with you somehow diminishes your enjoyment of it? Because that's fucking retarded.

I'm saying I wouldn't be caught dead in public with a comic book, cause I'm likely to get lynched and my body desecrated for it.

I'm certainly better than you. I don't go around throwing offensive slurs at people for not having the same opinions as me.

>inb4 "but I don't do that"
Yes you do. We wouldn't be having this conversation if you didn't. I can practically smell the lack of self awareness on you.

>I'm saying I wouldn't be caught dead in public with a comic book
I used to read a lot of fantasy novels and I got WAY more negative comments about that than I ever have with comics. These days people ask me about what I'm reading and will strike up a conversation lots. The stigma that comics have is mainly from /lit/ people who still think Shakespeare is the only relevant writer

>B-B-B-BUT Marvel Rebirth!
What about it?
I don't think anyone expected the FF to show up in Legacy.

This whole post reads like bait.

>I'm saying I wouldn't be caught dead in public with a comic book, cause I'm likely to get lynched and my body desecrated for it.
Grow a pair and don't be so ashamed of your hobby

>I'm certainly better than you.
No one is better than anyone else you self conscious little prick

/lit/ are fags
There's nothing wrong with trashy science fiction or fantasy novels
Comic books are fun too

Why bother screencapping this? That's pretty obviously just true.

Based marvel.

>We needed someone to confirm that? Not to get snooty or anything, but it was always pretty obvious.

It was pretty obvious but if you notice between here, and the comments section of OP's link, and a lot of other places, there's inexplicably a bunch of posters trying to keep pushing the "Fantastic Four were canceled because of low sales" narrative or "Nobody cares about the Fantastic Four" narrative. Then when confronted by how there were still books that had low sales that keep getting relaunched, they only point to Ms Marvel and Squirrel Girl and Moon Girl's success in other markets (which is true) but don't have much to say about Inhumans or Captain Marvel other than empty defenses.

You're a fucking idiot

Marvel Studios: only does movies
Marvel Entertainment: run by Ike, who also oversees merchandise approval along with overseeing the comic, TV, and cartoon departments

Fantastic Four merchandise and comic are affected so that's all on Marvel Entertainment.

>Just ignore them until they take the name off
And when would that be? How long will you wait?

Okay, can you maybe have an elitist attitude and stop being so nice? We're a comic book board.

Him talking about how getting fans angry is a great way to drive up sales and then quitting twitter last month because "things have gotten too toxic" is fucking hilarious

DCEU Terrifics movie when?

I don't 100% blame him (though he does deserve a lot of blame for certain things) because Fantastic Four is his favorite book and he obviously has to spin for dumbass decisions by his bosses. And if you look back at what he says he deliberately made it open for interpretation. Like his comment in response to someone asking about X-Men stuff:

"If you had two things, and on one you earned 100% of the revenues from the efforts that you put into making it, and the other you earned a much smaller percentage for the same amount of time and effort, you’d be more likely to concentrate more heavily on the first, wouldn’t you?"

is deliberately worded to make people think Fox got a cut from ALL X-Men merchandise, since the person who asked him was asking about DOFP stuff and a Goldballs figure and X-Men cartoons.

baswed

we cant even get a fucking Green Lantern

People who pretend that Tomasi is a good writer should be sent to mental institutions where their shit taste condition can be studied.

>7777

Fantastic Four sevens are witnessed.

It would be funny just to see Fox and Marvel reeeeee

Why the fuck are you even here?

>One of the foundations of Marvel
>One of the most celebrated runs in mainstream comics
>One of the most enduring and known teams in comic history

>Pushed them out like a cancer because movies

Good job on celebrating Kirby's memory, Marvel. Assholes.

This is a pretty accurate description of Marvel, but not the rest of the industry.

Stupendous Seven to launch as part of Marvel Nowest six months after Legacy to replace the cancelled Marvel Two-In-One

Starring Captain Marvel, Black Bolt, Iron Man, Star-Lord, Groot, Moon Girl, and Thanos

I'm more venemous than toxic these days, but fair point.

>A tiny percentage of the people who bitch about the lack of FF have ever actually read any FF. Most of them are just offended "on principle,"
Fuck off, please. Quit making shit up.

No one gives a shit about the F4 in the year 2017. They no longer reflect the average family model, Reed and Sue have never once been divorced in all their years of marriage, it's unbelievable.

No one believes you anymore, Marvel intern

>No one gives a shit about the F4 in the year 2017
No matter how many times you say it, it won't make it true, mouseketeer.

>They no longer reflect the average family model
They never did! How many families have the uncle and godfather help raise the kids?

if the FF titles had been selling, they never would have been cancelled, Marvel would have kept publishing them like they do X-Men. arguing Marvel won't publish a FF comic because Fox holds the movie rights while they still publish X-Men which Fox has rights to to is pretty stupid.

just read one of the FF books DC is launching soon

>if the FF titles had been selling, they never would have been cancelled,

>"Hey there, Fantastic Four fans! Feel like there's something missing in your life? Well we here at DC have just the book for you!"

Seriously, you gotta admire the brass fuckin' balls on DC here.

Fantastic Four could have continued, as a lower sales book. It taking a break is okay, it worked for Thor.

Whether it's because of FOX or just giving it a break, whatever. I hated Hickman's FF it was just boring.

Oh and you know what my favorite thing that people claiming that Fantastic Four was canceled for low sales imply? That the 30,000's is a cancellation number. You know what else was in the 30,000's?

FF bores the shit out of me.

Their associated villains are more interesting than they are.

T. Robyn hood, zombietramps, or boundless reader

I only meant that it's sales weren't the reason it was cancelled.

And you know what? I'm not even gonna post the Squirrel Girl or Ms Marvel or Moon Girl numbers since I do believe they get good numbers in trade form (at least, compared to the rest of Marvel's trade line). So we can give that handicap.

But let's pretend 20,000-30,000 is cancellation level like all the "FF was canceled because of sales" people believe.

>FF was canceled because of sales

FF was. F4 was cancelled because it has never had a steady audience since the early 1990s.

When? Random months

Feb 15

Fantastic Four 643 $3.99 Marvel 32,302

Apr 13

Fantastic Four 6 $2.99 Marvel 41,291
Fantastic Four 7 $2.99 Marvel 39,314

(remember 2013? when everybody was bitching about how Marvel only sold $4 books and they'd lose sales over it? yeah, couldn't sell a $3 title either, and so it must have been Fraction's fault, or maybe double shipping)

Sep 11

232 FF 50 Fantastic Years 1 $4.99 Marvel 6,761

(special anniversary issue nobody fucking bought because they're such fans of the FF)

Hickman's run from memory peaked high on variants and sold around 40k/issue on that same basis. That's not a lot of comics, but this other user is right - it's not cancellation.

Even the 600 renumbering didn't really help it; big variants spike, nothing else. When Hickman left, the "fans" left.

Imagine standing in a football field hearing the crowd chanting your name. You kick the ball, you go on home, glowing with the sense of importance that recognition gave you. Then fifteen years later someone calls you a fucking prick and you tell them you stood out on that field with thirty thousand people rooting for you, and they quietly point out that you're a cripple and those people were there for the football, not you, and were just chanting your name because that's what you do in the stands when the announcer introduces the make-a-wish kid.

That's F4 fans right now. Poor, crippled F4 fans, thinking they were important in that brief sweet spot before people stopped giving a shit about Jonathan "shit the bed" Hickman.

comicsbeat.com/marvel-month-to-month-sales-charts-december-2014-time-is-running-out-for-marvel/

>So a helpful commenter (thanks Randy C.) pointed out that the big boost to Inhumans #8 last month was due to Marvel shipping stores extra books to cross-promote with the Agents of SHIELD mid-season finale Inhumans reveal. So these lower numbers are much closer to Inhuman’s true sales numbers. Oddly enough despite this book not selling very well at all, Marvel is adding a second Inhumans book in April. This is likely due to the importance of the Inhumans to their overall publishing and film plans. Expect Inhumans to be an even bigger part of the Marvel Universe after Secret Wars.

This was back when the column was written by Jason Enright, who decided to adjust the chart for overshipping on that one issue. Current writer Xavier Lancel doesn't do that, but I guess it's because it's probably more work to do, what with Marvel doing a lot of overships.

So were you paid to make these halfassed excuses, or what?

>if the FF titles had been selling, they never would have been cancelled
F4's sales at their lowest were in the 30ks, putting it higher than the majority of Marvel's current books.

I like how Uncanny ended up selling more than Extraordinary, the supposed flagship.

>This is more a Marvel issue

Do you not remember the clusterfuck that was the New 52? Editorial fucking over writers and artists to the point that they quit or were replaced by people who would do what they were told was happening on a regular basis.

DC has been much better the last couple years, but they're not exactly innocent.

On his formspring/tumblr he's said that even if he disagreed with the official Marvel position, he wouldn't say it publicly. On certain topics it's hard to know if he really believes what he's saying or is just parroting the company line.

It's frustrating, but it's also a much more professional attitude than a lot of comics people have.

Literally just fake news circulated by mouseketeers. Get over yourself, shill.

Yep. And I will happily support this book too. And I will happily let Marvel know that I want a Fantastic Four book, and if they do not wish to provide it I will spend my money elsewhere at a company who is more than pleased to give me what I want.
