best time of the day

I would really prefer if he just had Valente show up before Freddy could do anything to him. Like, why deflate the situation like that at all?

Isn't Valente's power that he turns all magic into fire? Not like Freddy uses much magic.

Oh fug

cause its funny

Not really? It isn't played as a joke or anything and it's not humorous on its own.

wait are yo responding to the comic or the comment in the OP

The comic.

I said I'd prefer if he (Chico) had Valente show up instead of going "lol im just a hologram!" It isn't funny, it doesn't make Chicadino seem more intimidating or smart than he already did, and it just kinda makes the tension deflate.

Here's what I think.

I think he's recording this whole thing so he can paint the picture in the media later in a way that works in his favor.
A dangerous murderer killed guards of the prime minister forcing him to call in one of the local heroes to take him down.

oh ok i thought you meant the OPs comment
anyway it was supposed to. it was to slightly deflate the tension before ratcheting it back up with V appearing

rip Rambo

i think the stakes here are only really middling for Fred
i mean yes its possible his reputation in Canopy will be beyond repair but remember hes a high ranking agent of an extra dimensional agency. its possible he completely botches this and has to leave Kit and Poppy behind and move his family into the veil

...

The hologram angle doesn't really help or hurt that plan.

I *get* it. It's just like...why though? This only spans two pages. It isn't entertaining or anything, it just unhypes the crowd and asks them to get rehyped. Could have just as easily cut from the page of Kit fleeing to Freddy's pincushion maneuver, stepping towards Chico, and then getting snuck up on by the teleported in Valente. Just have Halia looking in from the corner as Freddy heads towards Chico and bam, you have all the details in half the space without the random whiplash.

I don't know, it's just so strange given Morbi's big complaint is that he can't move quickly enough with the comic format.

But Chico might not know that, or it might be his objective to just make Fred fuck off somewhere for a while.

Or it might be part of the plan to force Fred to go into the veil and then they can get a tentacle in through as well.

I don't know, there's always some plan within a plan within a plan wrapped in several layers of convoluted contingencies with these types.

SICK BURN IMMINENT!

Underrated.

Oh boy hopefully he can Purge all his magic before it's too late.

I find myself losing interest in this comic. I signed up for cute possum mom adventures and lately it's just endless politics and forced lesbian drama. Maybe I'll give it a break for a few months and come back to see if the story has gone anywhere.

It isn't going back.

Morbi's explained in the threads before that he didn't see the early chapters as individual adventures but as stepping stones to get into the meat of the drama. He's made it very clear that he's going to continue doing things like this and the switch to the illustrated novel format in a few weeks is meant to facilitate doing that without burning himself or his audience out.

RIP poppy then, the art was the saving grace here and taking that away ain't gonna help.

*it was just a hologram*

What's the name? I tried reverse image search on OPs image and got nothing

Next page Poppy puts Valente in traction while asking where kit has gone off to.

Morbi sure knows how to do cliffhangers.

While I personally prefer "several small adventures while the overarching plot is the thread tying them together" for this kind of story, I don't think the shift inherently hurts the comic. I'd prefer it be the other way, but it can still be good while focusing on relationships, politics, deep lore and battles.

My issue is more with the way it's being presented. I'm sick of the pacing. The last two chapters have been mostly "here's what we have to do to move the plot forward" and fluff. I'd be fine taking longer to get there if it wasn't as boring. Gimme something fun.

Friederich can't lose. Valente's strength is fucking up magic users, and he's fighting against someone that uses magic only to complement his fighting abilities.

Dude can wield swords with his feet, as demonstrated against Poda. He should be able to slice him in half without the extra magical arms.

Me too, user.
Me too.

There'll still be art.
Think of it as a light novel

>Think of it as a light novel
I thought you were trying to cheer user up.

So anything interesting happen in this series yet? I stopped reading when Poppy and that Fox Queen started to "date"

the only interesting thing happening is the fight going on in OP which was mostly offscreen
its only going to get shittier since the lazy fuck incharge thinks the drama and not the art is the comics saving grace

That was only last chapter, so no, not much has happened. Kit has been using illegal shit to cure her dad. When confronted with this, she ran away. Freddyhas orders on high to kill her if it means stopping this, so right now he's tearing through the nooks of Chicadino, who set all this in motion in the first place.

...when I say it like that I realize how little I care about Chico as an antagonist.

Oh don't be a baby.

an illustrated chapter book then
like captain underpants

Valente's Lucky Star works by converting magic to flame, including Valente's own magic. He's still at an extreme disadvantage being so close.

That's because, barring any later development, Chico is functionally a lackey for something greater. He represents an immediate danger, not necessarily a major or long-term one.

Shit is just now starting to pick up.

>Chico is functionally a lackey for something greater.
Yeah, and so was Jagi in Fist of the North Star, Dalton in Chrono Trigger, Jack in Xiaolin Showdown, Megatron in Transformers (at a certain point in certain storylines), Shredder in TMNT, etc. Difference is I care about them. They're interesting because they add entertaining dynamics to the conflict.

Chico's kinda boring. He's not even a terribly effective "stand in the shadows and laugh" antagonist. Shit, I'd even compare Dr. Claw favorably, at least he had some mystery around him and functioned as a joke on the cliche.

>He represents an immediate danger, not necessarily a major or long-term one.
Which is why "lol I wasn't even here" is so lame.

>forced lesbian drama
Doesn't seem forced to me, that relationship made sense from what we know of those two character's backgrounds.

Not them and forced isn't the right word, but I think it's telling that several readers thought the sudden hookup at the end of last chapter was just a joke. They kinda jumped from an friendly relationship to lovers real damn fast.

How can Valente be magically teleported if he uncontrollably turns all magic that touches him into fire?

It went from "Boris is hitting on Poppy and she seems somewhat receptive" to "Have I mentioned I am a lesbian today?" pretty abruptly.

I'd assume because it's not instantaneous. Like, medical magicks need to take time, but teleportation is instant.

His arm.....

She's bi.
Also I was surprised when Boris ended up...not really mattering. He was cool and became their friend and...promptly fell off screen. Seems like a waste.

Poppy has been hinted at as being bi since very early in the comic.

Why did you put "date" in quotation marks

Chico has a greater problem in that he's already been flagged for getting fucked royally. We know the Spectre of Fate is powerful and untrustworthy and Chico is strutting around like he owns the place while working for them. I think the real issue is that Chico doesn't really have a lot of appearances or development. Morbi really should have had an arc between him getting appointed prime minister and the current one to develop him as an antagonist.

That's part of the bigger structural problem with Poppy: Morbi's ideas are too damn big. We're years in and apparently like 1/5 done or some shit. There's too many plot points to push through with the way it's set up. Too much rushing to "when it gets good" and not enough development to make the road there entertaining unto itself.

He'd either have to back off on full speed plot dump or compromise on nuance and character focus to tell a larger scale story if he wanted to keep doing this as a comic.

>several readers thought the sudden hookup at the end of last chapter was just a joke.
It was so sudden. I mean even if I had thought Poppy was Bi beforehand I still would have thought it was a joke.
I never saw any buildup or sexual tension or anything. It turned out their growing friendship was secretly romantic.

*teleports behind you*

What he should do, combined with his burnout, is simply script the comic, maybe do layouts, and hire a separate artist. He's perfectly willing to take months long hiatuses, why not take some time off to write out a couple of chapters, hire an artist, then resume the comic? If he alternated artists he'd be able have everything done and ready to go months in advance once he got started.

Just because you didn't see a car coming doesn't make it not real when it hits you.

The main thrust of the chapter was to send them towards a romance. That's mostly why it feels like a joke too; it's almost lampooning how transparent the comic is being. Jumping straight from teassiring someone to LET'S BE A COUPLE is comical.

Because then things get complicated, he doesn't 100% own his work anymore, he barely gets paid as is, etc.

Still surprises me he doesn't write at least three chapters in advance given how big the story is.

The entire joke of the chapter was setting up the audience to believe Petunia was going to be comically blown out for assuming only to reveal that she was technically right all along.

But, again, it's a punchline so people don't take it seriously.

>tfw Poppy peaked at the tournament arc

>tfw fun is dead and we will never get a sequence like meeting Mary again.

It being comedic doesn't diminish its validity as a plot point. Seeing two characters explicitly say they plan to start dating and being surprised when they later do is just stupid.

>Good artist tries to make a fun comic
>Their own self loathing takes hold and ruins everything by becoming an outlet for said self loathing.

I swear to god it's always the furry comics too.

Nah there's plenty of non furry comics about self loathing and hating life. There are regular threads on how bland they are
If you want a furry comic that has yet to take itself seriously you might as well read Foxdad

It's about the extremity, not the action. Like ai said, the whole chapter seemed to be moving towards setting up a future relationship. When Kit shouts "LET'S GET MARRIED!!" and her retainer tells her she's delirious, the audience assumes this is a joke and it's simply a budding romance.

Suddenly jumping to "okay she's moving in now" is an unexpected leap forward that the audience is conditioned to not expect because the intensity of their flirting had just been played off as a joke. It's a matter of escalation and suddenness, not their hooking up at all.

I feel like it's okay as long as the change comes past the halfway point. A darker final act leading into a melancholy ending is awesome.

I'm talking about a work for hire contract with an artist, like what you see with Big 2 comics. The artist gets a flat rate or fee with no concession to owning characters.

Morbi is poor and isn't a company. Shit can get dicey fast.

You have the legal contract drawn up first. Work for hire contracts are pretty commonplace so it's not like he's in uncharted legal territory. As for money, he just needs to spend a year or two churning out porn until get gets a sustainable Patreon going.

Dude just wants to tell his story faster.

>Trusting in someone's project to turn out good when it's this ambitious and sprawling.

This webcomic is a failure, going to to novel format is just a defensive tactic by Morbi. If he got burnt out drawing, who's to say he won't quit again?

As for the update, I don't really give a fuck about Freddy, he''s a rather unlikeable character who's clearly working for an evil force, with only one running joke for him because all Morbi understands is anime slapstick. Valente is a jobber, so he'll get killed easily.

Never trust someone who puts lesbians into their comic to make a quality product, especially one who fetishizes them and indulges in demeaning dead lesbian tropes.

Okay.

Huh. I interpreted the previous page as a setup for the sheep guy to be some kind of badass that duels Freddy, but turns out he was in the story just to show Hallia sneaking around.

Okay he seems to know Freddy so he's a palace guard working for mob, so perhaps he's there to highlight corruption in the system too?

okay

>That last guard was on his last day on work
>He just heard fighting break out and was trying to defuse the commander he respected
>He was just doing his job as a palace guard
>Fredriech callously murders him
go valente

>>Trusting in someone's [pet] project to turn out good when it's this ambitious and sprawling.
>going to to novel format is just a defensive tactic by Morbi. If he got burnt out drawing, who's to say he won't quit again?
At least you got these parts right.
Too bad the rest of your post is silly.

I think he was just the guy they put at the door to keep any civvies from wandering in.

Freddy isn't a good character. He's just one joke, and all of the characterization that's supposed to make us like him is offscreen, what we have seen is that he's a filthy puppet.

I like him.

He's an overly paranoid war hero with a secret bloodlust who reserves his feelings for his family.

I can't entirely disagree as I don't think most of the cast has been well established.
The rest of your post is still silly.

Ditto. I think he's a good character, and that user is just looking for stuff to complain about.

>It turned out their growing friendship was secretly romantic.
how do you romantic relationships begin user?

he's a pit fighter who babysits for her some time
quelle surprise, hes not eating up screen time

Don't you know you're legally required to spend at least two months openly pining that the other party will never notice you and getting into embarrassing hijinks before you can start a relationship?

It seemed weird to even bother with them becoming friends and having that little bit about babysitting Lily if he's that irrelevant, given the size of the cast.

Poppy threads are a reliable source of good opossum reference pics.

Poppy's the reason I don't treat opossums like vermin, and why I want to track one down for a photo shoot one of these days.

What the sweet fuck is even going on anymore?

he's an ancillary character who was a boss fight that one time

the way people keep dissecting the writing in this comic is weird. the existence of side characters is wasted potential and time. romance is dumb and or poor cause its not developed the way they want. these villains aren't threatening because they aren't presented like i want them too be.
i dont think half of you can differentiate poor writing from "not exactly what i want of expect"

Don't forget people decrying the writing for being predictable even though they're constantly wrong about what happens next.

>Matpat browses Sup Forums

>started reading when the most recent page was the very start of Poppy vs. Boris

Imagine my excitement

I'm still gonna be salty if he gets beat by a blindside attack. I mean especially after he just fucking killed like 20 people.

What we have seen is an emotionless killing machine. The queen basically just called him a monster a few pages ago. Freddy is still an interesting character, wouldn't say has deep or complex but still decent.

Well Valente is a fucking powerhouse who now has the drop on Freddy. Safe to say it doesn't look good for Fred.

Triggered you pretty hard, did it?

>you might as well read Foxdad
Done.

Freddy killed all those people using magic, Valente just has to touch it and Fred's lit up like a christmas tree. Valente's power makes him one of the scariest fuckers in this setting when he's not getting blindsided by freakishly strong opossums.
