I'm gonna go on a limb here and say AC is gonna become one of those shows that are popular because enough people are in the "I think it looks really good so it is really good". And don't get me wrong, AC can be really very pretty indeed, but it falls flat in telling a sci-fi story.
In the last thread I drew a comparison to Ghost in the Shell:
Ghost in the shell displays transhumanism on a very neutral to positive ground. It shows us realistic downsides in cyber-brain disease, hacking attempts as well as corporate greed and other such things, but it also shows us the upside, a functioning society and all in all a decent world to live in. It doesn't make a decision for us to judge weather it is right or wrong to replace the human body (in part or totally) with machines. It shows you the possibility and the implications, it leaves it up to you to want or to reject these implants, but it doesn't pre-judge them.

Altered Carbon on the other hand goes another way. It CLEARLY and often says: "Transhumanism is bad!" The "creator" of stacks regret it, it is shown that ABSOLUTELY everyone who has lived multiple lives turns into an absolute fucking asshole, it throws the "We don't have the right to hold of death / only god should decide death / it isn't right to life this long" shit right in our face. But why? She said "we'll make it so everyone has a 100 years and then it's over" but why? Where is the reasoning? What makes 100 ok, but 200 is bad? It is completely arbitrary, based solely on this unfounded idea that transhumanism is, accord to AC inherently a bad thing.
But why? Because really old people get really corrupt? So what? Are you saying we are in a society without manipulative assholes right now? Clearly this is not the case, so who are you to make a cutoff at 100 years? Who's to say that knowing their exact death date wouldn't have an even worse effect on humans? Trying to cheat the system, going on stack-kill sprees because they're 99 and doomed?

Only watched the first episode and it felt like it was written by some dumb and edgy 14 years old's own self insert fantasy nonsense.

It's a pretty entertaining show. The tits and the violence honestly are not distracting to me like it apparently is for everyone else.

I do think it's a little hammy and over the top though. Not sure why the protagonist needs to be a "last of his kind" super soldier kung fu badass when the plot really only demands him to be a futuristic gumshoe. Feels a bit like a childish power fantasy, sci-fi really needs to cut that shit out.

But from a cyberpunk point of view ( so comparing it to other works in other forms of media) it's really low and normie tier, almost trash compared to things like Ghost in the shell(1995) and Neuromancer

The stacks are still shown to have a lot of positive qualities, murder victims can testify against their attackers and be resleeved, you can spin up in virtual and learn karate overnight, they could be used as Quell originally planned for exploring the universe. The message isn't "stacks are bad" it's "abusing stacks is bad", or "given the ubiquitous nature of human wickedness immortality is opportunity for infinite evil", or "humans need the rwsolution of death to give their lives meaning".
