My favorite PTA and one my favorite films. Manages to be fast paced entertaining popcorn flick while at the same time telling a classic greek tragedy portrayed by some of the finest living actors. John C Reilly, Don Cheadle, and PSH are all fucking hilarious, and the film is endlessly rewatchable.

10/10

ITS MY BIG COCK AND I WANT TO FUCK!

in your opinion, what makes it better than There will be blood

what did he mean by this?

Who's burt Reynolds, any relation to Ryan Reynolds? A cousin or maybe his father?

The acting in this movie is on another level. The whole cast is amazing. Also really like the tracking shots that shift between different conversations.

Boogie Nights and TWBB are my favorite, but BN is the best of early PTA. I feel so much dedication and passion in this movie. Like PTA was dreaming to make full length Dirk Diggler's story since he was 18. Sure a lot of Altman and Scorsese here, but every scene in Boogie Nights is memorable.

Boogie Nights is not a tragedy.

>a classic greek tragedy
>no chorus
>doesn't observe the three unities

It has a great opening sequence that conveys a lot with very little.
I kind of felt it should have had a more negative ending.

i agree, was disappointed by the ending

YOU'VE GOT THE TOUCH

How little you think Bill was and has his wife tried to bang Dirk or any other male talent?

would you have preferred seeing dirk digler lying in a hospital bed dying of aids?

This. For how dark it got at some parts, the ending was pretty happy for everyone who was still alive.

I think Burt Reynolds has said he regrets the role, and I don't think he's even seen the movie. He's against porn or something, I dunno

He did at first. I think he's kinda come around to it after the fact though, with it garnering him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Oscar nom*
My bad.

This is a film where the soundtrack elevates it to masterpiece territory. The Big Top theme that plays before the opening sequence is a huge indicator as to what the film is really about, and every time I watch it and hear that theme as the New Line Cinema title sequence appears I appreciate just how special this movie is.
To me, there's this vaudevillian undertone to the entire film where Jack Horner is the ringleader for a bunch of misfits and outcasts who have this kind of bittersweet familial relationship (which is pretty evident given the Oedipal relationship between Dirk and Amber). But then you have Reed who is also a magician on the side, as well as Rollergirl whose entire persona kind of revolves around the notion of performance, both of which help to reinforce the circus/vaudeville theme.

Favorite scene in the movie. Love that fucking song too.

>guy gets his ass kicked for calling out what a whore rollergirl was
>i'm supposed to congratulate what a brave move that was
movie went from 9/10 to 7/10

Their assault on him wasn't supposed to be a proud moment or a triumph by any means. The point was that his insults got to them on a personal level because they know he was right. It's the low point of the movie, and their lashing out came from frustration. I'm floored that anybody missed that they weren't the good guys in that scene.

Pretty cool movie, but that fucking happy ending just ruins everything. A rather ironic turn, considering that John Reilly's character mentions that Episode V was the best SW in exposition scene.

weird ending
> Wahlberg breaks it off with Aniston and plays folk guitar in Seattle (grunge)?
okay, sure whatever

good movie. glad he doesn't make em this way anymore though.
