PUNISHER STORYTIME
All this year I'll be storytiming Punisher comics, focusing mostly on pre-Ennis era material, with the occasional Ennis era story, and MAYBE some post-Ennis era stuff at some point. Expect at least 1 storytime per week.
Chuck Dixon produced a run on The Punisher in the 1990s that is often hailed as THE best non-Ennis run the character's ever seen, with Ennis himself even singing its praises. This run started with the graphic novel Kingdom Gone, then was followed by Dixon being made into the fill-in writer during the last couple of years of Mike Baron's lengthy run on the character, which was THEN followed by Chuck getting the assignment as Baron's replacement on The Punisher War Journal as well as being made the head writer on the then new 3rd Punisher ongoing at the time, The Punisher War Zone. He eventually would produce a metric ton of issues across all 3 ongoings, plus several one-shots, multiple issues of the various Annuals and seasonal Specials, and even a couple issues of Punisher 2099, ultimately making him one of the most prolific non-Ennis writers on the character ever alongside Mike Baron.
Up to this point I have posted VERY little of Dixon's work on the character (without checking, I believe I've only covered his first graphic novel and the Baron era fill-in issues).
Well that's about to change.
From this point onward we're gonna be diving headfirst into the Dixon era, starting with his lengthy run on War Journal.
I'm not sure how far I'll go today. I'll probably just keep posting until I feel like stopping. Where that ends up being, who knows.
A few of these issues feature covers by John Romita Jr. (in his prime when that really meant something), who would also do some utterly spectacular issues of War Zone along with Dixon (plus last week's team-up with Ghost Rider and Wolverine, which you can still read here: ).
