How do we fix G. I. Joe?

How do we fix G. I. Joe?

How do we make them relevant again like TMNT and Transformers?

I've been watching a lot of GI Joe as of late.

Honestly it's hard with the geopolitical climate of today, terrorism is a legit huge problem now.

That said I thought Renegades had the right idea for re-inventing GI Joe. shame they didn't really try harder with it.

I dunno maybe approach it more spy like?

also make the team dynamic great too of course.

Make them more legit military instead of autistic idiots pretending they are.

Duke should have been an officer because an NCO would never be given command of a unit. They should have had a basic uniform, not the circuits of outfits they had. They should have been fighting other terrorist groups aside from COBRA

It's kinda hard to work around a show about commandos and guns where you cant show anyone getting shot to death.

They have to decide if they're actual special forces or just elite infantry because actual special forces don't engage in conventional warfare, they're mostly covert and do things like recon sabotage, or surgical strikes

Make it like Call of Duty.

We need an actual war.

Call of Duty and Counterstrike show that there's still interest.

No way are they going to get the ROE to fight Islamic Jihad.

What if they make it gritty and realistic like the Flinstones comic?

is this bait

the 80s cartoon worked aorund exactly that for years by just being completely insane

Back in the 80s, terrorists were pretty easy to make into a wacky league of villains. It's kind of hard to really do that without comparing them to current world issues. It can be tough to have a military-focused cartoon out now without it turning into 'durr war is bad'.

But
While I do agree that the GI Joes could use some more military uniforms, it's important to make sure the characters are easy to tell apart. It gets harder when a character like Snake Eyes is the only one who gets unique gear.

The big problem with G.I. Joe now is that it only really worked due to the nation being unanimously proud to be Americans at the time of its creation. Every attempt at rebooting the series seems to force the writers to make the Joes into renegades or even on the run rather than part of the establishment. It's like writers are afraid of showing the military as a whole in a positive light.

Nihilism has been infesting reboots this past decade, especially with super hero movies and stuff like Transformers. For G.I. Joe to stand out from generic Call of Duty shooters, it would need to emphasize the big qualities of the original show: Unity, discipline, and a unwavering sense of optimism.

You don't have to make the conflict one sided, and you can even give COBRA's members their own complex desires, but the optimism for the future of America matters most.

They've done that several times and they're still not relevant.

>They should have been fighting other terrorist groups aside from COBRA
They do in the comics sometimes, but Cobra's enemy number one since they sell more toys.

>They should have had a basic uniform, not the circuits of outfits they had

That sounds retarded.

Gritty reboots are the expected route. The unexpected (And more relevant) move would be to not only keep it kid friendly, but also retain that sense of pro-american, pro-military optimism the original had.

Not only would it cause controversy for just openly stating how great america is, but it could also be a fantastic way to have a show that acknowledges the flaws of American society, but also shows how it's still something worth protecting.

The villains would have motivations against America for various reasons. But now they are no longer outlandish reasons like taking over the world, but instead focused around the flaws in the system they find unforgivable.

It'd cause such a shitshow and controversy from the get go, and if the show is GOOD, it'd get a fanbase to boot.

do a similar thing to Shield in the MCU. have GI Joe become the bad guys, from the inside. make it more espionage-esque.

Stop with the high-tech over designed bullshit. Make it about badass soldiers doing badass soldier things. Ninjas are a bonus.

Turn it into Overwatch.

I meant to say circus of outfits because they are pretty stupid. I realize they all look different for toy reasons but it still looks stupid. You can either treat them as Delta Force tier operators who wear what they want or as conventional military in which case they need a standard uniform

This may unironically be the best option. Take the first live action movie's direction of making the team multinational. Have them exist outside of any nation's jurisdiction. They're a group of soldiers who want to truly do good. More of a purely altruistic Outer Heaven. You can have conflict arise when some characters could be torn between duty and love for their own country even.

Well TMNT has been relevant for nearly 15 years now, ever since the 2003 series came out. It had been consistently getting content ever since.

And the 2003 show was great because it stuck closer to the comics and had some solid character development. Then the 2012 series became more of a homage to the cartoon, and made the turtles act like actual teenagers.

Transformers was the same really. Sure the movies are what everyone thinks of, but before and after that there was always a constant flow of Transformers cartoons.

GI just never really got that treatment because it relies on the nation's feelings as a whole.

Like if GI Joe got a new show around 2001/2002? It would have been a smash it.

Some people might think this is shitposting, but he has a point: Overwatch is more or less a multi-cultural military unit with superpowers. Just change the super powers to military specialists, downgrade the tech a bit and make it america focused and you are golden.

Hell, making a terrorist faction robots that want to be treated as equal would allow for some surprising violence.

These ideas are the best ones here for a possible reboot. An enduring sense of optimism and faith in what America 'is' seems needed to make G.I. Joe standout over every other military themed franchise lately, but that doesn't mean it can't delve into criticism and satire of America today. In my opinion there's two ways you can go about a G.I. Joe reboot:

>retool it into an adult property like Resolute was as a series that delves deep into the actions an organization like the Joes would have to go to to face an organization like Cobra and the radical methods Cobra uses to inspire terror and gain power that can go into some really dark content
>or you can do a show intended for all audiences including children, being a lot more camp but still having a blend of an adventurer serial that can touch upon real life issues in the conflict between G.I. Joe and Cobra like the genuine threat of terrorism

No matter what I think focusing on things like the characters and their motivations should be a priority and showcasing things like how an organization like the Joes work as a team out of a genuine sense of patriotism and belief in American values and how Cobra can attract so many people to it to show off how terrorism itself attracts people without a cause or looking to advance themselves. Master-class writing isn't a requirement but adding more subtleties that can go into dark places with a core of hope and optimism for the future is needed if they really want to evolve the franchise in any reboot.

Of course since this is Hasbro they'll probably cock it up no matter what.

Well if they could somehow make marketing gold out of the my little pony series, they could do GI Joe.

The issue isn't Hasbro itself, but Hasbro finding the best person for the job of directing it. Someone who grew up on the toys and know how important that optimistic message is.

>Run on sentences

Fixed.

Make Cobra more like ISIS.

The recent Fast And The Furious movies are basically the modern GI Joe at this point, right down to sucking the dick of the military-industrial complex. They even have their own personal Cobra according to Fate of the Furious.

It's an old dated concept and can't be revived.

I hear the IDW comics are pretty good, but I haven't read them. Nobody has

Make Cobra like MCU's Hydra.

Make it a parody of all what it is supposed to represent.

Make the stories more sci fi, with laser, robots, etc.

Make the GI Joe more heroic as if they were super heroes and also they would be an international group (although most of the memebros would still be American).

The Cobra would be a far-right American group, extremely "patriotic", its recruits would be the mostly white young people of the interior unemployed disillusioned with the future.

Like your mom.

>They should have had a basic uniform, not the circuits of outfits they had.

You're the kind of guy that makes Bayformers and current DC movies going, everything has to be gritty and realistic, no possibility for colors or crazy plots.

*keep going

Just make Snake-Eyes: The Series. Nobody gives a fuck about the military except people IN the military, but ninjas never go out of style with the kids.

>Nobody gives a fuck about the military except people IN the military
Fucking this. But I say don't make it just a ninja show. A well-rounded group of characters with diverse roles will appeal to a larger demographic. Ninjas, soldiers, cops, etc.

>The Cobra would be a far-right American group, extremely "patriotic", its recruits would be the mostly white young people of the interior unemployed disillusioned with the future.

So not much change there.

>How do we fix G. I. Joe?
Bring back Renegades.

They already tried that type of shit in the comics (SNAKE EYES................................featuring G.I. Joe). Didn't work.

Why can't the franchise take a risk and do a Brave and the Bold-esque show and embrace the campiness of the old Sunbow show?
Why does everything have to be gritty and/or edgy just for the sake?

Wish Hasbro would make a deal with Netflix to bring this back just to use all the build up side Joes in an epic payoff

Ellipses are three dots.

Go over the top with the gadgets and cheese.

Just continue Sunbow RAH, but in DC Nation format.

Copy either Metal Gear or Overwatch to a degree.

Honestly, in the geopolitical climate of today... G.I. Joe just doesn't work as well.

It's simple, hired some good writers who are willing to do the impossible and relaunch the cartoon teams from the cartoon in modern day. Having a few of the team members being the next generation of the original team formed in the 70s or 80s.

Too bad the character designer died. He past away during season 2 pre-production which is why it never got a season two.

G.I.Joe was never good.

Let it stay dead.

>G.I.Joe was never good.
It lacked stuff in the 90s but rest is pure fun

Make them allies with Cobra, fighting some lovecraftian grimdark magical shit from other dimension while having conversations about methods, wars in the past and how things are changed now. To add some extra depth, Cobra may have encountered same type of shit long ago while GIJOE knew nothing of it, and wantednthe world domination exactly because of that.

Duke is a Colonel put in charge of a secretive deniable operations unit intended to tackle the most dangerous and immineint threats to America and the free world. This group is supplied and equipped with experimental, non-standard gear signed by black-box government contractors.

The problem? The 'troops' aren't regular army, they're a disparate collection of wierdo's who just happen to be the absolute best at what they do, put together from Coalition resources from all over the world. The Name G.I. Joe is a joke because the unit itself is anything but General Issue, despite their funding being hidden in standard defense spending as 'JOE, General Issue"

You can't. It's too violent. Moms don't want their kids watching a show where HUMAN military army shoots guns at HUMAN terrorists with guns. It's like NRA: The Show.

Transformers gets away with it because it's Robot v Robot. And Robots aren't people (thus don't matter).

And TMNT is the turtles destroying robots and Inhuman Mutants.

Like previous anons said, the best way would probably be taking an Overwatch/TF2 approach and focusing more on the fact that both the Joes and Cobra are oddly-dressed fighters with weird weapons.

FULL FORCE!

>Make them allies with Cobra, fighting some lovecraftian grimdark magical shit from other dimension

Wasn't there a toy line where they were going down that road when they dropped the small figures in favor of the Extreme Line? Star Brigade or something like that?

Plus the "lovecraftian grimdark magical shit" was pretty much Cobra-La.

That fucking battlecry made me laugh so many times

Possibly the biggest G.I. Joe fan on Sup Forums here.

You don't fix it. That ship has sailed. You might as well ask "how to we make Woody Woodpecker popular again?" You don't. It's too late for that.

Hama knows best. If he wants "colorful unrealistic soldiers with just a tad of realism" then that's what works. G.I. Joe has never been well received when it deviates from Hama's vision.

this is the worst idea ever

...

First of all, when you make a live-action adaption, don't kill off the main lead.

Make it like that animated movie they made a few years back that was on adult swim

>We need an actual war.

Pretty sure we're gonna bomb Korea soon...

Why not just make Russians the villains? Isn't it okay to make Russia the badguy now because they outlawed gayness?

The high-pitched delivery is what really makes it. I wonder if Gautier actually did it that way or if they sped it up.

>How do we fix G. I. Joe?
Focus it more on the actual heroes like Destro and Cobra commander instead of the terrorist organization that is GI Joe

>quakity toyline chocked full of articulation and gear
>well written and compelling cartoon
>maybe add a comic into it
>play the cartoon on an easily accesiible and consistent scheduale

COBRA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA

>that one user who got detained at the airport because he answered cobralalalala when asked if he is or was part of any terrorist organization

umm Duke was an E-8 / Top. He never was in charge that would have been Flagg or Hawk, But the Top damn near always runs the day-to day shit.
Duke in a normal unit would still be 3rd in command, with i think Flint being the XO or 2nd in command. After Duke i think Beach is 4th since he has the green-shirts.
Plus they are SF they get to wear and use what ever the fuck they want.

>After Duke i think Beach is 4th since he has the green-shirts.

Stalker, Beach Head, and either Scarlett or Gung Ho all had the same rank. The comics usually put Stalker in charge though.

...

...

...

Unless I remembering wrong Beachhead was always at least an E-6 and took over from Stalker in the Command chain
Scarlett was i think a E-5 at most and got promoted up afterward
Stalker was a E-5 when Joe started (for fuck sake he was the first JOE selected) was 4th in command until Beach came on. He is the default leader of the what ever field team he is in with only Duke being able to pull rank on him.
Gung Ho was a E-7 but I don't think he was ever referenced in the Command chain.
All of them were E-9 when they brought the team back in the 2000s

...

>I dunno maybe approach it more spy like?

Tehre's the answer. Bill Cobra less as a terrorist organization and more of an international crime syndicate and/or a corrupt corporation.

So I got into G.I. Joe with the CGI movies they did a while back. I fucking lost my shit when I found out that the origins of COBRA in the original cartoon was that they were founded by a fucking lost society of lizard people.

bump

>>that one user who got detained at the airport because he answered cobralalalala when asked if he is or was part of any terrorist organization

For real? The absolute madman.

>They should have had a basic uniform, not the circuits of outfits they had.

There's a very real reason why they all have different outfits; so they're all easily identifiable. It helps sell toys, and in the comics and cartoons, it helps viewers tell characters apart.

Unless you know all the actors, or can quickly recognize their voices and faces, war movies can get confusing when everyone's wearing the same uniform.

The 90's had G.I. Joe Extreme which was about the most 90's thing ever.

We don't speak of frosted tips snake eyes

Is the Naruto run on purpose?

Do fictional evil organizations have pissing contests?

COBRA, MAD, SHOCKER.

what other ones?

It's also why war films tend to cast actors with widely different builds and give them as much variety in haircuts as possible in a military context.

I think a basic uniform would work well if it were a unified color scheme for pants and tops with everything else custom for the character. The comics sometimes do something similar by using the same color across characters, usually green.

G.I.Joe is just a concept that doesn't work anymore. Especially with the dumb-looking characters.

Give it to Michael Bay.

THIS

yeah it was back in 12 i think and there was this one user was stopped and detained by airport security because he had the same name as a guy on the no fly list. He was detained for 4 hours and missed his flight and even thought it was found out that it was not the same guy they still didnt release him until the feds arrived and when they did arrive and asked him if he was part of any organization he answered cobralalala in frustration

Start a new war and use all the 200 plus characters they fucking made. I hate this Snake eyes and his band of four faggot friends.

>They do in the comics sometimes, but Cobra's enemy number one since they sell more toys.
They're the only enemy faction in the toyline, aside from the Headhunters (which only exists as a separate faction because of the anti-drug paranoia from the early-90's).

>How do we fix G. I. Joe?

You can't because nobody gives a fuck about GI Joe.

GI Joe was the way for kids to play out their war fanasies. Now they do that by fuck each others mom in CoD/Battlefield/fps of the month.

Doing any sort of "realistic military" Hama bullshit that the old Joe fans jerk off to won't work, turning it into a knock off Overwatch won't work.

So just let it die like Thundercats, Master of the Universe and the rest of the 80s franchises.

>The Cobra would be a far-right American group, extremely "patriotic", its recruits would be the mostly white young people of the interior unemployed disillusioned with the future.

Sup Forumsbra would be the best villains ever.

COBREA KEKEKEEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKEKKEKEKE!

>How do we fix G. I. Joe?

>Set it in China.
>Make G.I. Joe par of the People's Liberation Army
>Cobra is a secret American terrorist organisation that wants to destroy The Chine communist party because REEEEEEE COMMUNISM REEEEEEEEEE
>Make a movie out of it

INFINITE MONEY

How's the current Joe series by Larry Hama? Kinda surprised he decided to write the series after all these years.

This is the most retarded type of thinking, if people were to think like you no properties were to survive past a decade l.

Give it to a dev that actually has some interest in the property. Make a TPS that shows off the costumes and has solid combat, preferably something with team based action. They can come out with a solid roster and mission based objectives for SP, 'Wargames' MP, and keep selling new additional shit to keep Hasbro's attention.

Overwatch has been mentioned and it does some things right, but more importantly, you could give this an identity to make it stand out and churn interest. Comics/Cartoons could follow and play along, but in general it'd supplement the toy sales.

G.I. Joe needs to focus more on the waifus. That's why the Devil's Due reboot failed, because they killed off Lady Jaye.
