Hardass Storytime with Parker

Time for Darwyn Cooke's brilliant adaptation of Richard Stark. Parker is a *very* different sort of thief from Bandette...

Darwyn Cooke adapting Parker is the kind of perfect blending that you get maybe once every ten years or so. There might not be a better person to draw that kind of classic pulp then Cooke.

Also a reminder, everyone here should watch Point Blank and the director's cut of Payback.

Also Full Contact, the Chinese version with motherfuckin' Chow-Yun Fat.

...

The recent Parker movie with Jason Statham was a mess, but I do think Statham would've made a perfect Parker in a better movie that hewed closer to the books.

This sort of crap was easier to get away with in the 60s.

...

...

Wait, that's a Parker adaptation?

>The recent Parker movie with Jason Statham was a mess

To put it lightly.

>but I do think Statham would've made a perfect Parker in a better movie that hewed closer to the books.

He's just too clean-cut. Parker needs grit to him, and outside of the Crank movies Statham's never really had that in him. He's great as The Transporter because he's got the classy English badass thing down, but that's why he was always a bad choice for Parker.

Still not the worst Parker movie though, that credit goes to Slayground.

Gibson planing the guy's credit card was a pretty good update.

Cold bastard, innt he?

Yeah man, Westlake didn't fuck around. Fucker wrote some dark shit.

Even the director's cut of Payback didn't go *quite* this far.

Lookin' pretty Golgo 13 there, Parker.

...

Noir is the universal language.

...

I wouldn't be surprised if the Golgo writer was a big Westlake fan, there's a loot of crossover between Parker and his stuff.

...

...

The "Oh crap." moment...

Now *this* is a mean bastard. At least Parker only hurts people who are actively in his way.

...

Mal is the pretty much the genesis point for every low-life piece of shit penny-ante asshole in crime fiction.

Watch him in Snatch or Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrells. Statham can easily slip into dirty if the role calls for it. He strikes me as an actor who could easily push his acting limits if he only gave a shit.

Payback has some quirks, but it really is a solid version of the story.

The Director's Cut fixes like 90% of the problems of that movie, it's fucking fantastic.

...

I was unaware of this; I'll seek it out. Thanks!

...

Yeah, Mal goin' byebye.

Oh yeah man, it's a must if you're a Parker fan.
