I thought the animation in general was gorgeous, both 2D and 3D; I hadn't heard that story about the college kids, I'd like to read about it if you have a link.
The English dub was fine, not great but not terrible either. I have no idea why they cast Jeff Dunham, but he voiced Phospho and he wasn't too bad, desu. I was more bothered by Rob Lowe's voice, but that's because I kept hearing his character from Moonbeam City. And I agree with you about Mune, he was 2cute.

The main draw of the movie is the animation, so it was really nice watching it on the big screen, even if it meant also watching it with the English dub. But you should definitely check it out because of dat animation. Here's the trailer
