Man, Bronze Age Zatanna had a dumb costume.

Hey, Tex.

So Fontana seems to like digging up obscure characters and actually, y'know, using them. Mayfly, that evil Amazon from Secret Six, and even Moot. At least, I'm fairly sure that's Moot.

Gotta give her some respect points for that.

Can't say I was fully satisfied with the way she used Mayfly but I'm still glad she used her.

I feel a lot of WML influence in her issues in general.

I did really like the issue, though, more than the previous two.

My only complaint is I don't really get what she's going for with the narration about Hippolyta. It doesn't seem to be thematically connected to anything else.

I'm honestly kind of surprised with how well Thomas seems to get Wonder Woman. Being a massive JSA fan, I'm kind of also a long time Roy Thomas fan, but I didn't expect him to get Wondie as much as he does.

...

>Can't say I was fully satisfied with the way she used Mayfly but I'm still glad she used her.
Yeah, but it's a short run, so the appearance was okay for what it is.

>I feel a lot of WML influence in her issues in general
Not just because of use of the villains from that run, but the more down to earth tone, and focus on Diana's personal life and relationships to friends.

Plus, there's this bit.
>I made an OATH to care for you, Etta. I sighed my name!
That is some straight up Taco Whiz shit right there. I love it.

>So maybe it's time I vibrated my hand into DIMENSIONAL SPACE, to retrieve my MAGIC LASSO
A+

Also,
>Captain Diana Prince
What's Steve's official rank, if he has one?

Wow did you just assume xir gender

This is back when house style was good. Love the panel tilt on these two pages.

In this, he's a colonel

Unfortunately this is the only issue of this three issue arc that Gene Colan draws but his use of panels is definitely fairly experimental for the time.

Perfect example here
with the light beams going outside the gutters.

This page is totally fucking fantastic too.

...

This is getting a little Kirby-esque

...

Well, the whole thing about writers not getting the character seems way more recent than it seems. This was the 70s after all, and the TV show was on, so in general, there wasn't any confusion. Then Kingdom Come happened. And then Infinite Crisis happened, and then Amazons Attack happened. Everything went to shit three separate times, and only the movie has had any success in repairing the perceptual damage.

i saw some pages on twitter from drawing the marvel way that was a comparison of Marvel style vs regular style and it's so great to see how it's more than just the actual art making up the style

I have no interest in reading this, just came to say that it's a fucking awesome cover

OK, O want this guy to come back.

"Inexplicably enduring fuck-up world" is a kinda fun twist on this idea, honestly.

True, but even with the show I expect writers to sometimes have her as generic superhero lady who beats up bad guys, but in this she's always talking about using force as a last resort.

I need to read some more of her Bronze Age stories to see how common that is.

All three covers of this arc are fantastic.

>captcha: porn mini

Also, breaking single issues into chapters was a Roy Thomas staple, something he brought back from the Golden Age for his Invaders series.

So Donna Troy, Black Canary, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, head of Lois Lane, Mera, Raven, Starfire, Batgirl, Zatanna, Powergirl but who the hell is that? Tala?

Hal showing off his tiddies there. That could be one of these contorted Hal panels.

Unpopular opinion: this is a great and in fact superior Zatanna costume.

Disembodied head next to Wondie's feet is Huntress, lady in purple dress is Madame Xanadu.

It's not bad, just the top hat and fishnets are so iconic.

S P O O K Y

The carapace headpiece and big 'Z' earrings and cape just make it all a bit weirder and witchier, and I prefer that.

All the best artists take cues from Gil Kane when drawing Hal.

...

...

Hmm I thought Huntress had a full cowl when she started out. Also didn't know that Xanadu was more than a horror hostess and was involved with the JL. Cool.

From my experience with Sup Forums I can only think of the Indian jokes they'd be making.

>Four Horsemen
Heh. You were saying about this story being very Kirby-esque, Tex?

Er... Sup Forums - Technology, not the other one

BRB, tea.

That's Golden Age Huntress, this one's her daughter who just debuted, in back-ups of Wonder Woman, coincidentally.

Xanadu was kinda like Phantom Stranger in that she would show up occasionally and be like "there's some magic shit you can't even CONCEIVE of". She was being pushed more in the DCU at the time because DC's horror books had just been cancelled.

>diana using her lasso to compel zatanna to cast a spell altering their physical/mental state
wew lad

this is like multi-fetish drifting

Are you sure? You're kind of on-topic with the old Sup Forums too.

Matt Wagner and Amy Reeder did a great Madame Xanadu series in the late 00s. Like so good I'm mad because I want her to be that good everywhere

It's all fun and games until someone brings in Sup Forums

Here's Lois!

When people are like "Zatanna has no good stories", I say she's a supporting character, that's how she got so popular. Check out Bronze Age JLA.

Which so happens to just have gotten an omni

...

Bronze Age Wondie omni when, DC

Seriously, this Zatanna looks like she's straight out of an Anna Biller movie and I'm a huge fan. I am converted. The stage magician costume is trash, it should be destroyed. It does not deserve to exist.

Hey, Diana has to spin the lasso so close to her head cause the title is so huge.

Where the fuck is my Lois Lane mini, DC?

Also, that face. She looks like goddamn predator with that narrow-eyed smirk.

Really cliche speech but basically the same words my mama taught me all my life.

Also this whole story is probably a metaphor for how disco was the end of civilization

...

I like how in Morrison's Earth 2, the primary Earth is the one discovered by Alexander Luthor, who refers to the main Earth as Earth 2.

youtube.com/watch?v=hxh-YVSoZeE

They only just got around to collecting HALF of Perez's run. DC is fucking shite when it comes to trades of older material.

Well, she's getting a bit of spotlight with this whole Mystic Trinity thing, so there's that.

DC is going a bit Trinity crazy right now. What next, is there gonna be a Cosmic Trinity with space characters? Get a Robot Trinity going too, why the fuck not.

...

Robot trinity with Golden Age Robotman, Doom Patrol Robotman, and... Red Tornado? Cyborg?

OK, Pestilence giving Peej a fucking cold is genius.

Plague's kind of excitable compared to famine. My guess is he has a deep insecurity complex because he knows he represents living organisms unlike the other horsemen of the apocalypse, so he always has to act like the edgiest one of them.

>Power Girl being bitchy
Shocking.

Also, I like how this is quickly turning into Wonder Woman: The Brave and the Bold.

...

...

So I guess Adjudicator's test of worthiness is just "how badass exactly are these people? Can they beat my sick boss enemies?"

...

"Madame Xanadu - Advisor"

Red Tornado, Indigo, and yeah, probably Cyborg.

How timely.

...

Nah it's to do with the ordinary people, right? The starving Hindu people didn't betray their principles and eat a cow. The doctors in Atlanta are trying to save people knowing they must be infected too.

HOO BOY

That makes more sense.

Thomas' WWII history knowledge showing through.

...

...

Yea after seeing Morrison or John's handle her I'd lost all faith. Thomas is one of my fave writers and I'm glad he understands her. That man is truly ahead of his time. His Avengers run is also a one of my favourites.

Which sucks because it seems my other fave weither Busiek doesn't get her either if you judge with his writing of winged victory. Then again he did reiterate his astro city characters aren't direct portrayals of any DC or marvel heroes.

But it just makes it weird when his superman expy acts more accurately like superman than his WW expy.

...

Also the fact they're not actually killing anyone.

Yeah, I was talking about that last night. Busiek typically does get DC's characters so I'd give him a shot, but Winged Victory doesn't give me faith.

>Earth X
I do not need this shit right now.

So, I always read Ares as Steve Blum, don't know why, just do. And I just instinctually did the same with War here.

The guy gets typecast even in people's heads.

Arc finale. NTT was one of the few DC comics I was into when I was a teenager so I'm excited.

Oh yeah, remember when you had to get consent from other writers to use characters they were writing?

There's the meme about JLU Martian Manhunter always getting taken out by mind shit but he's got nothing on Raven.

Man I love pre-Crisis Themyscira.

"Earth sux" -Adjudicator

Pretty sure the consent thing was still being practised until mid to late 2000s.

I recall Breevort getting pissed at Bendis trying to off the white tiger in his daredevil run and forcing him to discuss his ideas with the creator to see if it was ok.

Bendis said it was truly a humbling experience at the time and realised how important these characters are to other individuals. And he has shat on everyone but his pet characters ever since.

Hoo boy, just wait till he sees Earth Three.

Oh nevermind it's... Earth-I?

>Bendis said it was truly a humbling experience at the time and realised how important these characters are to other individuals
LMAO what a bunch of bullshit. Fucking Benis.

Speaking of Wondy expy's, I read The American Way last night (original, not the new one), and was happy that the Wonder-Woman and Superman stand-ins went on one date (specifically for good PR), and immediately had a fight and decided to not pursue a relationship.

...

I can believe he means 'humbling' as 'humiliating' and that was the supervillain origin moment where he swore his soul to bitterness forevermore.

There's a reason people only give a shit about the animated Ravens.

Also, her face is kinda melting there. Yikes.

Been meaning to read that, and that sounds pretty nice for a change not to have Wondie and Supes bang.

>DEATH RIDES A SPACESHIP

Shit, the guy storytiming Daredevil did that arc a few nights ago and it managed to anger me again

I like NTT Raven, she was emo before emo was a thing. "I can't love you Wally, I don't know if I can even FEEL!"

That's highly likely.

What's Starfire saying, Johnny Quick's goes-fast formula?

SCIENCE! KANGAS! The Amazons had it all back in the day.

>Cosmic Portal
Okay, George, I'm officially a little mad at you. Y'know, more writers would probably take an interest in Themyscira if they still had all this cool shit.

Man you are one of these people who doesn't want to them together. Im so happy to hear that.

WW/Superman shipping is right up there with how did Lois not die from fucking the man of steel. Like it's comics you cant suspend your disbelief right there? Not where aliens light years away grew and evolved almost human like? Or that superman doesn't crush the toilet when he uses it with his super shit? Or he doesn't crush the floor he walks on? Or crushed the cup of coffee he is holding? The guy is a superhero, if anyone can do mundane things with overwhelming strength it's him.
