Actually we see 2 different kind of response to a traumatic childhood experience from Ben and Rey. Rey is who tried to hide the truth and created false memories as a kind of protection, she lied to herself, never acknowledgeing the truth. This is why she survived i think. She is helping people and she sees him and freezes and he almost moves towards her like he wants to go to her, but she closes the door on him but doesn't look away. Thats why I would love if IX or expanded media cover his political ideals. The FO came about because nothing was getting done in the entrenched two party system of the New Republic and one of the parties (The Centrists) wanted to secede to create the FO so they could essentially stop crime waves dominating non Republic worlds.
