The Adolescence of Utena is most "art house bullshit" anime I've ever seen, but it stays legitimately entertaining by knowing exactly when to take itself seriously, when to take the piss, and when to be unclear which it's doing. I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in animation.

Pretty much everything the Japs do is kino. They're generally highly obsessed with the aesthetics of things. You can watch just about any animated motion picture and find a lot of satisfying visuals and cinematic direction going on through-out. You don't need to be a weeb to acknowledge the fact they still treat animation in their country primarily as an art form, rather than a commercial venture.

GitS is extremely overrated. It has interesting concepts but it just doesn't work as a film. It's literally just eyecandy scenes followed by the most obtuse exposition and philosphy dumps i've ever seen followed by eyecandy, repeat. You can literally watch the pretty animation scenes, pause the movie and read the wikipedia page and get the same experience. This scene encapsulates everything wrong with it.
