JSA Storytime: Omega the Unknown

Good evening owls,

live a poem

or, well, you know

I finally got Ring of the Nibelung yesterday. I sat and read Rhinegold along with the opera. The dialogue isn't one to one with the opera, at least as far as I can tell because I don't spreachen sie deutsche, but it's still not too difficult to follow along with, making for an incredibly unique experience, especially for a pleb like myself who prefers to read things over watching them.

...

He makes some really weird transliteration choices that drive me nuts with a few character names

and yeah, the opera is talky! in fact, that's the thing that surprises people IME the most about Wagner, they expect non-stop high volume and you get a lot of chatty people instead

What's really interesting to look at is how PCR tries to convey the mostly instrumental parts, like the interludes that cover the scene changes, or the part near the end where Donner parts the clouds and you see the rainbow

lol no one got gold pieces out of a surprise coin packet

Those world pieces paid for themselves

>70s NYC.jpg

here we go lads

Hello, Storyteller.

Normally I'd try to have something relevant to say here, but honestly, I can't be arsed. Sup Forums is having one of those days.

And on top of the usual bullshit, Nintendo is pulling that manufactured scarcity with the SNES Classic. Stop fucking doing that!

So when collecting(downloading) fourth world stuff found out Gerber did some Mr Miracle?

i called my local gamestop to ask about it, the poor worker sounded so tired

I wonder how common a sight it is in Marvel NYC to see two people get randomly atomized.

Yeah, IIRC Gerber's run was the run that coincided with Orion's "O" costume.

I can't always tell if the dialogue has been shortened to fit in speech bubbles or if the singing is just stretching out German words really long.

Either way, highly recommend the experience to anybody that has any interest in the operas OP has talked about. The individual issues are a lot cheaper than the hardcover but it's VERY high quality. A comic that basically has a soundtrack is kind of unheard of AFAIK.

Also, I've got a depressing as FUCK quote from Mary Skrenes, let me get it

I really don't understand Nintendo's thinking on this, it seems so deliberately perverse

Being endlessly bugged about a supply issue you can't do anything about is a very particular circle of retail hell

I like how insane every character in that is from the word go. They all have passions they cannot even hope to contain. But I'm a true pleb, I haven't even touched the opera - or any opera. Just read that comic once.

yeah i've had it happen in food where it's just "sorry we're out. nothing i can do"

Skrenes shortly after Gerber's death:

>There were some people who could only write, that's all they could do.
>Steve, unfortunately, was one. And people should know comics are a place to start and then move on. But he didn't like animation, and he didn't like television. He liked comic books.

>And on top of the usual bullshit, Nintendo is pulling that manufactured scarcity with the SNES Classic. Stop fucking doing that!

I got lucky and managed to pre-order one in person.

>Fool all your friends!
>in a Foolkiller guest spot
Those poor, innocent, murderous urban NYC children

>comics are a place to start and then move on.
Fuck
yoooouuuuuu

PCR has trimmed the dialogue and he's not really great at getting the alliteration/Stabreim of the original, but that's hard as fuck to do

The hardest thing to try to duplicate, which I think he doesn't succeed at but can't, to be fair, is the pacing of the opera, but also the way the motifs communicate meaning and layer and thicken as you go along

TBF that's what most operas have that makes opera fucking cool--forget realism, we're here for the oversized emotions

I don't really get the point of the remake consoles. Isn't most of that stuff on the Wii U VC anyway? Or even the Wii one, which had a nice classic controller too.

But yeah Nintendo has been doing that scarcity shit for a while. I don't really get the point, unless they see sales do better if you stretch a release out more or something.

the cutest lil Hawkman

>same cheap paper, same pedestrian design

Dream: go to a con in full pirate garb and hand these out to people

What the fuck, man.

>He liked comic books
Damn right, he did. That's what we need in this medium, more people that are actually passionate for it, not failed screenwriters, or novelists who think writing a comic book would be a "fun experiment"

glad I don't have space for shit like this or I'd buy a ton

You gotta remember that Nintendo started as a toy company, and to a degree, they still think like a toy company.

See, with toys, it's beneficial to make hot button products harder to find, since toys are a more niche market that relies on collectors who will spend big cash on special edition merch.

Video games however, have reached a level of ubiquity that makes them desired by a much larger range of customers. Nintendo is old and Japanese though, so their thinking is archaic in this regard. The SNES Classic is a highly anticipated product, this toy company Nintendo defaults to making it scarce, because that's how toys work.

It's fucking stupid, but there is a "logical" thread here. Though you'd think they'd have learned from the NES Classic debacle. Nintendo, you're possibly the least scummy of the big publishers, please stop doing stupid shit.

We also need less fanboys that read comics and only comics. And when I say comics I'm talking about very mainstream, very popular cape comics.

From what their experience at Marvel was like, I don't blame her. Even Kirby wanted desperately to get into animation. Until DC put royalties in place and Marvel begrudgingly followed, working in comics was like working a retail job-- no matter how much work and passion you put in, it was basically a thankless job with shit pay that you used to get into a higher-paying industry.

I don't think she was trying to be dismissive of comics as a medium, she was just saying he had all this amazing talent and never got real recognition out of it, and his creator owned stuff sold like shit.

Ahhhh, that does make sense.

I'm so glad that digital releases mean we'll never pay $75 for a used copy of FFT again

ALSO I have a backlog but should I buy Dishonored for $2.50? Is it fun if I don't really care for FPS that much? Can I sneak without total bullshit?

Fuck the NES Classic, you'd think they'd have learned from the freaking Amiibos.

It's weird that they're so much better about this with handhelds when those are probably more collectible with all the colors and shit

Hell, Kirby didn't even expect to be the one to finish things like the Fourth World.
He expected to get them started and then pass them on.

So, yeah, I think looking at the overall perspective of the time like you're saying is apt.

Reminder, this was the era of the ugliest baseball uniform ever: the mid 70s Astros

Also I hope any fellow Texans here are not on the coast and have GTFO somewhere safe

No, he expected to finish Fourth World. The other projects, The Demon, Kamandi, etc were supposed to be continued by others.

yeah if you like stealth it's fun

>when you read he wanted Ditko to take over Mr Miracle

I would die to see what that looks like!

I want that Conan shirt desu

Okay, then...does it make stealth fun and not annoying and super-finicky? Because I tried the ESO Thieves' Guild stuff and noped the fuck out real quick when it's all "you get to sit and hide in this basket until the guards move, isn't that cool?"

captcha, that is literally the Sibelius monument, those are not actually chimes

According to Evanier, he expected the Saga to end, yes, but he only thought he'd do the initial set-up arcs.

Oh yeah

best boy

Thing with Dishonored is it's kind of a "casualized" stealth game, but not necessarily in a bad way. Combat is very effective so getting caught doesn't mean you have to just reload. But you have LOTS of options for sneaking and many different routes. It's really satisfying to get through without even being seen once and leaving no trace at all.

If Gerber had gotten more stuff out in the mid-80's he would have been super successful, I think. By then there was finally a market for more offbeat or artsy comics, you could actually make a living publishing stuff like Ronin, Maus, Watchmen, etc. Gerber's attempts to break into that market just didn't work out somehow.

Quite ironically I had finally cleared this weekend to go to the coast while being too stupid to look at the forecasts. So I guess I'm gonna have a staycation instead and eat pizza instead of delicious seafood.

I know this is Spider-Man, Marvel's biggest character, but couldn't they have chosen some characters who actually can fly/glide like Superman and Batman there? Y'know, like Iron Man and the Human Torch?

everything about this is fucking great

Yeah, have a staycation and see how much/if there's damage, because it's mandatory evac at Port A and Galveston is bracing too

Right? You STILL can't get a hold of amiibos through normal channels.

The video game industry is such a mess that even the company that, let's face it, saved the medium can't stop fucking up.

I'm actually really glad they're not consistent about it, otherwise you couldn't play any of their games.

I'm sure Spidey's made a web glider at some point.

I'M A POET

Didn't he even mention in the back of the Manhunter Special that he was sad that he New Gods got canceled so he could work on Demon and Kamandi?

Financially it's true.

>just wrecking their shit and leaving

rude tbqh

Yeah, because he had stayed on longer than expected on New Gods that it became a much larger passion project - while Kamandi and Demon came from editorial mandates.

Literally, "Create a Horror Comic" and "Create a Planet of the Apes Clone"

Does animation really pay better? At least nowadays

...

Greg best boy

also as noted last thread, the last issue & this are his first appearances

I didn't realize Gerber had actually created Ross, Greg and Kurt

>last panel
Uh oh. Our boy James-Michael seems a bit tired of fools as well...

Innocence lost.

this outfit looks a little more cowboy-y than piratey

thank you Duggan for reading OHOTMU

Right, the hat is totally not as floppy as it becomes later on

...

Post kept getting eaten but - I have no point of reference but I love all these PCR close-ups and atmospheric scenes of demented love, rage, avarice and whatnot. The sorta oppositional, unfulfilled, doomed trajectory of it all seems set out right from the start with the dwarf and the mermaids. And then everything comes crashing apart in fire and flood at the end, it's great.

Anyway I really liked it as a comic - so I probably should try the fucking opera sometime!

yes yes you should :)

Omega just wants to buy a suit!

Yes.

Dishonored is great. Arkane knows how to do environmental games better than most, and it's not a difficult game.

I, too, wish to be a master of Karate

RIP Kurt.

Okay I'll add 1 to my backlog because dude, $2.50???? that's dirt fucking cheap

I need to fix my shoulders before I game and I keep meaning to replay/finally finish Oblivion

I imagine TV writing still pays more, since the comics industry is very small and Hollywood is very large, and typically you are paid per script, with bonuses coming from sellthrough of the issues.

There's a reason most writers (such as Bendis) realized there is much more money in character royalties and creator-owned comics.

Overall, there's probably less of a gap between the two than there used to be, since writers have become a dime a dozen and comics is very incestuous.

Man these letters pages have been the best I've ever seen. Lot of genuine discussion going on in them.

Again I do recommend trying to listen to the music along with the comic because it was such a great experience for me. Obviously not a replacement for watching the real thing but there's no other comic that has a soundtrack like that, you know?

OP will hook anyone up with all the opera you could ever want, of course

Gerry Conway has like a HUGE tv career I had no idea about

the ice rink at Rockefeller is really something

love all that Art Deco

Yeah, it's clear this book provoked strong feelings, so I'm glad I got the old scans with letters in them

oh shii-

I gotta say, all this endless bitching about Domino has made me somewhat interested in her. She must be an amazing, richly nuanced character for her legions of loyal fans to express outrage at her portrayal on the big screen.

Seriously, could we run a Domino centric story sometime? I just gotta know if she's worth all the fuss.

lololol

Domino is a lot of Fun, but not exactly deep. Great tits. But you already know what the outrage is about.

>you know this is going to be a big one
Oh, you have no idea.

She's lame and a Marvel woman character which means she gets passed around between the guys as a cock sleeve.

My favourite weird comics/tv knot is now Spidey Super Stories > The Electric Company > Tom Whedon > Joss Whedon.

I was so surprised to find out how huge Howard the Duck was for a short time back in the 70's.

Apparently the highly successful "Howard for President" button campaign was done entirely by Gerber and Skrenes behind Marvel's back, as well.

hahaha I missed "Wholesome Howard Chaykin"

SOMEONE is a scamp, that's for sure

If someone has Howard for me to DL, we should absolutely read Howard some time.

>But you already know what the outrage is about.
Yeah, I know. It's just, I wish they'd bitch about a change that actually is a betrayal of the character. Like making Etta Candy skinny, or Veronica Cale British. THAT is some genuine bullshit.

Marvel should hire that big titty writer who was getting waifu'd here to do something with her, that Secret Empire short was actually neat. And Domino is totally a cheesecake character.

Admittedly I just want to see more Sup Forums doublethink on 'I hate SJW writers' vs. 'This SJW writer is hot'

Someone posted the work-for-hire God pages in another thread. Gerber was really on point when he wanted to be.

THERE IT IS

Domino is best as a self-aware cheesecake character--let her be hot and sexy but also shoot things and have adventures, you know? She can also keep banging Piotr because god knows he needs to get over Waifu Kitty.

Be sure to get the DLC with it. Knife of Dunwall and Brigmore Witches is really, really good

Uploading, gimme a few.

>Domino is best as a self-aware cheesecake character

i thought that was she-hulk

One's X-Men, the other's Avengers.

>Wholesome Howard Chaykin

Shulkie is more of a pure comedy character who is also really good in slice-of-life scenarios, with the lawyer thing; Domino is an action character who should be blowing things up

You mean Luppachino, whose name sounds like a Starbucks coffee? She's doing the art for Robinson Wonder Woman.

>SJW writer
Which at this point equates to "GIRLS REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE".

...

This reminds me, I've been discovering that Gruenwald's Cap is absolutely LOADED with beefcake fanservice. Like every other issue has a gym shower scene with two or more guys.

Shame with how much Spencer drew from Gru's Cap, he didn't take that too.

/d/lectro's brief but blessed appearance has colored all hero/villain interactions and frankly sluttish trash talk in this series for me in a certain way. Can't get over it.

No, not her.

No, it's that blue-haired girl. The one who posted about her tinder match once.

GDI Dishonored with all the DLC is tenbux and not two-fiddy, still worth it?

TOMORROW: LAST ISSUE (and then two Defenders issues if we get to them)

thanks for reading

Where is page 5?

I saw some of that on Twitter! It's amazing! Especially that casual naked Starfox in the background.

Leah Williams is the name. Ibanez Domino got a thread and then someone looked up the writer and Sup Forums was Sup Forums.

just ads I skipped this time
