Its literally shown in the ending why. Too keep it short, he has become a violent man, and finds it is too late, and impossible to change. Watch the movie again and think about why the camera focuses on his fists so much and why they become palms when his love is around only to return to being fists very shortly when he gets angry. Julian in Only god forgives is Refn deconstrucing masculinity through a series of different themes. But thats just me, who the fuck knows really? Just watch the movie it has pretty pictures for fucks sake.

I think refn was trying to introduce the sword as being a better instrument for a man than simply using your firsts or something in that line. A sword doesnt hurt the hand like the fist does. It is still up and personal unlike a gun which can be used to cowardly detach yourself from giving a punishment against whoever deserves it. bla bla bla. I know it is a far fetched, because it doesn't make much sense with the ending so i believe that the scene is mainly forshadowing. Tell me what you think of it. Maybe your input makes more sense
