The problem is that the film tries to play it serious most of the time, but the ham-fisted humor cheapens the entire experience.

Yup, but it has aged horribly. Doesn't matter if it looked okay back then, I'm watching it in 2018. Plenty of old blockbusters have effects that have aged well. This is not one of them.

Well that made me chuckle, but I can see its not exactly sophisticated. But they put these little gags in to appeal to the audience and avoid being totally serious. Its NOTHING as bad as the Marvel movies of late, you coukd probably gind at most 10 of these across the whole trilogy. Many of them are in keeping with the characters too (particularly the hobbits).
