She looks like a cute
Are the books good?
>This is going to shit all over the books isn't it?
Is that a big loss?
It's a seriously huge loss. A good example is the girl, in the books she is supposed to be so facially scarred and disfigured that she only has one eye, her ugliness almost defines her character for 4 books and they've gone and made her a cutie pie. Theres even a nod to this in the third book when she sees a poster of a fictionalized version of herself and its been sexed up.
btw if the premise seems baffling to you i am willing to answer all questions, i know its far fetched but theres some seriously good in universe lore to explain it.
Huh. Well, that sucks.
I'll check the books out when I have time, I guess
Please do, the more people i have to talk about them with the better. Its YA fiction but it doesn't stint on the gore or pretty things up. Absolutely top tier.
Alright, I've not seen anything but the teaser.
What the fuck is this movie about?
Mad Max but gayer and with cars being entire cities
>Mad Max but gayer
oh really
Set in a post post apocalyptic world divided between two spheres, The Tractionists, who live their entire lives aboard giant moving vehicles called cities and the anti Tractionists, who live wherever the cities cannot reach them. By the time of the movie cities have been moving for around 1,000 years but the prey they rely on (smaller cities and non-moving cities) is beginning to run scarce. London, first but not the largest traction city has been hiding for a decade on the edges of the great hunting ground (where the citiies roam) until something has now sent it flying east at top speed, towards the lands of the anti tractionists.
What happens when cities are eaten? Are they all just recylcled to use for the bigger city and everyone inside ground up into peices?
Can you give me the plot for all the books real quick
Maybe the scarring isn't the same but I imagine she's covering half her face for a reason, user.
When cities are eaten then all materials they have are recycled by the devourer. Former citizens of the eaten city are either integrated into the larger city, enslaved in the engine rooms, or just dumped on to the bare earth, where they'll likely die or be enslaved.
Plot Points for the four books:
>Mortal Engines
Young Londoner, Apprentice Historian Tom Natsworthy saves the head historian of his guild, Valentine, from a facially scarred female assassin only to be betrayed by Valentine and literally thrown off the city moments afterwards (because he saw the girl) Forced to team up with the girl to survive on the bare earth (which no respectable city dweller would ever step foot on) he finds that she wants revenge for Valentine killing her parents, stealing one of their archaeological discoveries, and slashing her face and leaving her for dead. Now perused by a merciless old tech Stalker (re-animated dead body) They must uncover the mystery of Hester's parents murder. Does it somehow connect with Londons uncharacteristic mad dash eastwards, towards the land of the anti tractionists, where no moving citiy survives.....
>Predators Gold
After the events of the first book Tom and Hester are now air traders with their own airship, in the meanwhile prey has grown so scare on the hunting ground that Large unscrupulous cities are offering bounties for the locations of good prizes, something that has long been frowned upon by respectable tractionists, who have always operated on a speed and sized based darwinism called municipal Darwinism. When their airship is attacked by a new faction of zealous anti tractionists known as the Green Storm, they are left drfiting and powerless over the northern ice wastes, a death sentence. Luckily they find the small but elegant city of Anchorage far farther north than any normal city would go. Devestated by plague and sick of running from larger cities (cont)
she still has her nose and both her eyes, thats not ugly enough for Hester Shaw. If you read the books her ugliness is what drives her and defines her, its mentioned almost every time she is.
Wait there are city sized cars?
(cont)
The Margravane (Queen) has decided to take her city of the thick winter sea ice back home, to america, the dead continent, where no cities move, and nobody has lived for centuries.
>Infernal Devices
(SPOILER ALERT) After successfully making it to America Anchorage has lived peacefully for about 20 years, back in Eurasia the Green Storm have militarised the anti Tractionist movement and declared war on all moving cities. In return the cities have allied together and pledged never to eat another moving town until the war is over. Bored with life in Anchorage, Tom and Hesters daughter Wren seizes the first chance she gets to escape to explore the world but ends up kidnapped and enslaved, with her parents in hot pursuit. But what is the Tin Book of Anchorage? Why does it have the seal of the long lost American Empire on the front, why was Wren kidnapped for it, and why are both sides of the war desperate to get their hands on it? (cont)
Yea I think so. I'm not a fan of peter jackson and haven't been paying attention to this
>A Darkling Plain
The Green Storm is under new leadership, it's armies of old tech stalkers and airships are almost exhausted and the cities have grown fat on the materials they gained in the war. With Hester lost in the conclusion of the previous book, Tom and Wren now ply the skies again as air traders. Things are not as they seem however, the ceasefire cannot last forever, their are rumours of a Stalker with a golden mask in the mountains, and Manchester, largest of the Traction omnivores heads east to try and begin the war anew. The final apocalyptic confrontation WILL happen any moment, but who will win, will anyone even survive?
This looks interesting, maybe I'll read the books. I guess Hollywood just doesn't like facial disfigurement on characters. Same thing with Tyrion in got.
There are giant moving cities, they arn't cars just gigantic traction vehicles with city sized populations living aboard them. Some cities are also giant ships that float in the seas.
>intact upper face
For fuck's sake Jackson.
One job.
I know literally one fucking JOB REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I've lost all faith in PJ after the trainwreck that was The Hobbit. It's a shame because LOTR was about as perfect an adaption of the books as you could possibly get imo.
It wasn't a perfect adaptation but they were great movies
>talk about it with me if you like
as if we needed permission, asshole??
not him but YA isn't a deterrent for me, Animorphs still remains one of my favourite series despite how many filler books are in it. i'll give it a shot
Well you did and now you've got it and i won't take it back so shove that up your arsehole and smoke it
Well if you get round to it come back here and make a thread so we can talk about it
I’m willing to cut him some slack. There were extenuating circumstances.
>le ragtag group of rebels takes down ebil rich people in the future meme #23493890
That doesn't happen you spazwit. Read the fucking plot synopsis i wrote for all the books
So you're telling me that there's no rebels good government bad type shit? As in none at all?
I'm struggling to believe it but if you're serious I might actually consider watching a torrent of this.
Oh there's people rebelling against Londons government in the book because they have harsh speech and recycling laws but they are merely side characters to drive the plot, Neither of the main Characters get involved because most of their story doesn't take place on London. Its more of a globetrotting swashbuckling adventure than some kind of #resist shite
Hah! no doubt theres some inspiration been taken here. Are you a fan or did this just strike you watching the trailer?
These books were rad when I was a kid, the trailer doesn't give me high hopes though. Do you user think it'll make enough money to film every book?
Ii don't know if i want it too with the design choices they are taking. If Hesters now intact face wasn't enough, they've giant metal Lions on Londons track housings which look retarded and a giant Union Jack on the jaws of a city that doesn't even know the UK ever existed. I'm deebly goncerned
not to mention the "there'll always be an england" song in the trailer, WTF they don't even call the language English in the books. I'm bracing for a hobbit tier fuckfest desu
Just my first thought upon seeing the trailer. I know next to nothing about the books.
Damn, glad im not the only one feeling like this. Ive been saying for years this series should be made into films...
It really wouldn't suprise me with the kind of man Phillip Reeve is. He used to do the illustrations for the Horrible History books
I've been saying it for years and years too user. Could have been an epic for the ages but it looks like Hollywood has fucked it up for us. Seems likely we'll get monkey pawed
>another useless female protag
Its going to be shit.
There's three protagonists to the first book, 2 are female and one is a male, the male is the primary protagonist
Pre-Twilight YA was actually good. The Queen's Thief series is among my favorite books series ever. I'll definitely be checking this out.
Eh. I'm usually willing to compromise if they at leas make an effort like Tyrion or Arseface. It's hard to emote through all that makeup and CGing it would lead to weird shit like Cavill's mustache.
I guess but it really is what defines her as a character, she's ugly outside and later it leads to her being ugly inside too. It really annoys me that Reeve was aware of this and has it happening to this exact character in this series and then goes ahead and lets it happen anyway
