Basically as I understand it, film is higher fidelity that pretty much any digital resolutions we use now. But that fidelity is always limited by the screen and medium you're using to watch. Audio's similar that way - vinyl records are actually higher fidelity than CD's, as well as lossless .wav's ripped from a CD. That's why they can release 1080p Blu Ray remasters of stuff like Citizen Kane, movies that are decades and sometimes even a century old. The fidelity of the film has always been there, but it's not like you could appreciate it on a shitty 480p tube TV screen.

The tricky part is, film degrades over time (then again, so do digital files, but honestly I don't even know how that works really). That's why, if an old film is remastered in 1080p, it can look sharp and great and all, but you still see that graininess of the film, and you can tell it's older footage than a 1080p render of film that was recorded this year.

I'm not aware that film cameras have gotten any more technologically advanced since years and years ago, it's more that our means of digitizing or copying film for home viewing has advanced.
