However, yes they are cross fertile as you will see later on with a few families.
It is never explained, don't think about it too much.
The fact that there are animal people doesn't really effect the story, it's really just used for puns and background visual gags.
I maintain that if the same script was just used for human actors instead of animation, the series would hold up.

Well, his personality is just a typical good natured dog.
Instantly affectionate, want's to be everyone's friend and loved by everyone around him in return. Doesn't hold true grudges and easily forgives. "Lives in the moment" etc.
That's how they write him.
You can take away a dog's food, toys and give it a smack, then walk out the house and leave it on it's own for several days. The moment you come home and it sees you, it will shower you with affection. This is why he still adores Bojack despite his betrayals of his trust.
