What else are worth checking out? I heard a lot of good stuff about Kontroll but haven't seen it yet.

Bela Tarr is also Hungarian, right? I really like most of his stuff but Werckmeister Harmonies is my favorite.

I remember watching Kontroll about 10 year ago, it was about 4 in the morning and I was still up with insomnia and it was on Film Four.

I still remember it and think about rewatching it even to this day but I always put it off because I don't think the memory of it will hold up if I do rewatch it.

It's about a ticket inspector in the hungarian metro underground, with some spoopy/creepy stuff happening (although I don't think it's a horror, just a day in the life kind of film)

Isteni Műszak / Heavenly Shift is also good.
Taxidermia if you in the mood for some true weirdness.
Liza a Rókatündér / Liza the Fox Fairy is also good.

Yes.
Give some reccs pls.

The Viszkis Rabló (2017) also seems good but I havent got the time to check it out, they say it's one of the best mainstream Hungarian movies from recent times

If you want something contemporary: Taxidermia, 2006.
If you want to see classics:
early Jancsó, pretty much anything by Fábri Zoltán, Fotorgráfia (1973, Zolnay), Love by Makk Károly or even Tanú (1969) if you are interested in the satire of communist Hungary.

sadly the writing is pretty weak

>but I always put it off because I don't think the memory of it will hold up if I do rewatch it.

I have rewatched it about a year ago after not watching it for many years as well.

It does hold up, it's an extremely enjoyable film.

Everything with Barbs in it is obligatory magyarkino

Hungarians also have the honor of owning the worst ever animation movie, Kis Vuk (A Fox's Tale).

I can imagine it's inception like this:

>Be Hungarian producer with good connections
>Buy rights for 30 year old animation movie everyone thinks of fondly because of childhood
>Get Hungarian Film Foundation to chip in millions of Forints
>Get EU to chip in another millions
>Get all the money
>Buy coke mountains, hookers, cars and flats from the money
>Months pass, director and producer still in deep cocaine induced weeks long trip
>Ohshit it's premier in two weeks, we have 0 progress
>All the money is gone
>Sell back some of the remaining coke
>Get some B- celebrities for voices who aren't occupied with anything at the moment
>Get the cheapest Pentium 4 PC to do the animation
>Put a mildly Down syndrome affected individual to animate it by the one yellowed P4 PC
>Premier day comes
>Parents, viewers and the heirs to the original works boycott
>Egon and Dönci, a garage project made in CryEngine 1 made with 0 state funding because the Filmalap denied it crushes Kis Vuk at the box office
>We tried so hard and went so far

Finally, somebody else here who has seen and enjoyed Kontroll. I watched it for the first time a couple months ago and was pleasantly surprised. I always knew it as "that movie with that guy from the Karma Police video" because I caught a scene with him late at night channel surfing past Skinemax or something many many years ago.

...

>Cant believe I forgot to recommend Macskafogó.

The first, original VUK is good though. I remember TPB has an international language with ~4 language.
Also the animation studio in the 70s-80s made godlike kid animations. Stop motion and drawn.

Yes, I remember seeng them on Magyar Egy.

The 2006 Kis Vuk though... It's pure torture.

how hard is it to learn hungarian

If you have a qt magyarfu teaching you'll be nailing it down in a yiffy

I remember the shitstorm when it came out
what the fuck were they thinking, it was a disaster

I don't really know any Hungarian films.
But i've seen Fateless and thought it was pretty good.
It's an interesting and a bit different movie about the Holocaust.

I've seen it as a kid with my class
the only thing I remember is a wound with worms in it

Oh no unsanitary conditions caused by wartime supply shortages how horrible

It's a good thing those germans got their comeuppance in the form of entire cities being wiped out during allied firebombing raids with tens of millions of civilians

Son of Saul / Saul Fia might worth a checking out in this genre, also the lead actor is a coroner's assistant IRL so he was extremely autentic in the role.

Where the FUCK can i watch Cat City 2 (Macskafogo) in english subs

Love this movie. Basically Drive on a train.

Name 5 Hungarian movie

>millions of Forints
m8 forints are literally zimbabwean dollars, i'm too shitfaced to calculate it but i reckon a billion at least

I saw some movie years ago, I'm pretty sure it was Hungarian. It had a dude who stole peoples atm cards inadvertently buy a gypsy girl. It was in black and white. I've tried to find the damm thing again but no luck. Anyone know what the hell i watched?
I never got to see the ending.

Funny you mention it. I put it on my list yeaterday.
Didnt even know it was hungarian.

Holy shit, I just googled it and the budget was 6 million in USD.

Doesn't sound much written down like this, but if you take a 10 second look at it it's clear it was a money laundering project.

a holo-movie, made under the regime of the ""nazi"" Orbán PM.

talks az a nazi dictator, acts like commie

i'm hungarian, yet i never watched any artsyfartsy from Béla Tarr

is he really so famous in the world?

>No one mentions the fucking abomination of a musical """directed""" by the creator of Rugrats

...

Hunga- , Hu-... Honga what now? What's that, some type of brand?

there are more hungarians in hollywood than you expect

Bela Lugosi, Gabor Zsazsa for instance, but the wiki even surprised me:
>Rodney Dangerfields mother was hungarian
>Drew Barrymore's mom is hungarian

well.. descendants of hungarian jews... but anyway
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Hungarian_Americans

also
>the foreign language in Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2047 is hungarian
>Altered Carbon's lead, Takeshi Kovács is part-hungarian

Look up Ben Affleck's full name, you'll be surprised...

bought it after seeing it on tv years ago - might have even been film four my twin user

Let's not forget about

The c.k. in louis c.k. comes from szekely which is the hungarian part of romania
