according to mike reiss, the problem was the show was owned by Disney, not Fox. Fox saw that they could get good ratings with another animated show after the simpsons, but wanted the syndication money too
so we got King Of The Hill instead. mike reiss sounded sincerely bitter about it.

I do love The Critic, but even at the time, I noticed that it was "fake edgy"
