Sounds as if people are taking this statement a little too literal. I really dont understand Disney. If they had to cut Luke out entirely from TFA because he was "the elephant in the room" stealing from the other character if kept in, and then when they show him they keep him as a jaded hermit to minimize him, it seem really counter-intuitive.
If what the fans really want is Luke, why didn't they give them what they want and just make the new trilogy around him as the MC? Then in a new trilogy elevate a character like Rey outside of being his sidekick or something.

I'm convinced Hamil was just talking shit about it to try to get the character killed off. It's the only reason why Ford signed back up on the films was on the agreement they got rid of Han. Should be interesting once Hamils no compete clause in his contract is over. Luke was the only likable character from the originals, he was the character that basically sold everyone on jedi and the force being awesome. Lukes character was pretty much what cemented the whole original trilogy together and made it all popular.
