Just finished watching Mute. I enjoyed it. However, I think the problem people have with Duncan Jones' dystopian universe (keep your eyes peeled for Sam Bell) is that it is too real. People write off blade runner and other dystopian movies as what ifs and enjoy them as speculative pieces of fiction. Duncan Jones' universe is too grounded and plausible. It makes people uncomfortable because it really isn't outside the realm of where we could end up. I could see the future portrayed in Mute as a distinct possibility. Other movies are a little further afield from the path our society is on and while they may be disturbing in their own right, our minds are more at ease when watching them because we don't see them happening in our lifetime. The world of Mute seems a lot more possible and is therefore a lot more unsettling. Maybe that's a fundamental piece of why critics seem to dislike it. Hits a little too close to home.
Let me say the movie isn't fantastic. But it isn't bad either. It is like a 7.5. Pretty good but not required viewing. Anyone else get this sense? The reviews I saw don't really match up with what I saw on screen so I think maybe critics are reacting to something else they didn't like, but don't want to admit.
I just finished it too, some good feels in there. Not bad.
Chase Reyes
If by "a distinct possibility" you mean exactly the world we have now with more neon lights and better artificial limb, then sure. What do you think is so scary about this movie to critics? Trannys? Gay prostitutes? Those are things that exist already.
Luke Ortiz
Mute best operator.
Blake Reed
I was thinking more about continued war, increased corporate power. More international conflict. Traveling between borders seems like an issue, even if Paul Rudd is AWOL, it seems restrictions in that sense are more elevated.
Blake Nelson
Also, there must have been some reason for the Amish to flee back to Germany. Increased religious intolerance in the US?
Oliver Robinson
>more liberal propaganda soyberpunk shit
Cameron Brown
Pretty standard cyberpunk stuff, honestly. Actually interesting aspect of the movie that isn't properly developed or expanded upon in character, theme, or story.
Isaac Torres
Faggot didn't watch it says what?
Jack Jackson
Mute was the worst thing I’ve seen in years.
Oliver Bailey
What?
Daniel Adams
the absolute madman
Dominic Thompson
This shit was so bad
James Flores
>I think maybe critics are reacting to something else they didn't like, but don't want to admit. Weeooweeoo netflix shill alert
Cooper Myers
I had similar views but liked it more. It's a movie with a budget on Netflix so critics hate it. They are essentially trained to attack them and were pulling at their chains for a chance to attack it as it released.
The movie lets the world be the world which I liked but will probably bother a lot of people because they don't explain stuff like Cactus being AWOL. It doesn't need a detailed explanation but it won't sit right with some people.
Cactus and even his fucked up friend are surprisingly likable so the dark turn will certainly rustle a lot of jimmies.
Thomas Hill
Typical lefty luvvie Jones shit. He and all cultural marxists should be lined up and shot.
Easton Williams
It's the best friend being a pedo.
Jack Ortiz
I've been struggling to think of something else like this and I think probably the closest movie I can think of is Strange Days.
Austin Cruz
Why would you hate this movie?
I get it if you're super transphobic and it makes you uncomfortable. Or think the whole gender fluidity bullshit was too on the nose. But Jesus, that was a really well done movie. It was a better movie then Bright even if the world wasn't as interesting.
"That's a real sexy hood ornament you got dancing up there tonight". Made me spit my drink out.
Jaxon Powell
Paul Rudd is short as fuck, yet was pretty threatening in this movie.
Ian Powell
Why did the doctor record the little girl in her underwear from behind?
Kayden Roberts
Because he's a fuckin pederast who got off to little girls.
Chase Smith
Just a reminder that conservatives are incapable of making enjoying entertainment or art
Jayden Clark
He was recording the prosthetic leg's motions to see if there were any problems. Going the extra mile as a doctor.
Chase Anderson
One of the unsettling elements of it is that we get it from the perspective of a mute amish man. He's brought up to be resistent to what is now basically his whole society and struggles with it. The story is him having to learn how to really deal with the modern world instead of just getting by, because he's guided by a purpose finally. It's also actually a pretty good depiction of disability (the delivery kiosk and library scenes).
Jayden Morales
The scene cut away before we could see the mute guy fight the muscle wielding the sexy hood ornament's leg as a weapon. This gave me blue balls. I give the movie 0 out of 10.
Gabriel Richardson
I think for that to work as they wanted it, the world would have to be more fleshed out and significant to the movie. But it was a nice introduction to how day to day life operated in the movie.
Easton Taylor
>Sex bot kabuki theater
Brandon Davis
It was pretty outputting tbqh. If it was handled with some weight maybe, but it seemed like this was just there to add something gritty and edgy to a desperate and boring movie.
The actor was great though.
Ayden Turner
it was shit. some made for TV level acting and a lot of the movie looked cheap. premise was bland.
Henry Jackson
What went so wrong?
Evan Perez
Someone gave him a budget.
Blake Hughes
warcraft was really dull
Jose Davis
Critics are still salty about that one time he fucking destroyed that guy who tried to blast him in an interview. Duncan talked to him like he was a child who couldn't understand basic shit. It also made it clear that he ultimately aimed the Warcraft movie at the right target audience (or at least what should've been the right target audience): children.
Charles Gonzalez
>too real
There was nothing "realistic" about it. People don't like it because it's a boring pile of badly made derivative shit.
Leo Morales
don't make excuses for this sorry excuse of an abomination, Moon is looking more and more like a fluke with every release from Jones. Also, if you don't think 75% is required viewing that's insane, only a small percentage of films are worth ratings of 8/10 and above
Evan Ortiz
This movie was liquid shit
Ayden Gutierrez
>Pseuds will pretend there's something to this film that plebs don't understand This movie is by no means terrible, but a character driven drama with mediocre, underdeveloped characters is by definition a bad movie. Also the pedo doctor's actions were nonsensical, to say the least. I understand that the movie wanted us to believe that he felt a lot of guilt for letting Cactus die, bu the fact that he needed Leon to proclaim his crime loudly so much that he not only kept him alive but also performed a surgery on him and then drove out all the way down to some remote bridge, was hilariously contrived.
Ryder Lee
Why is there a 10 minute scene of Paul Rudd gurgling? Is this a sexual metaphor?
Angel Reyes
Mute > Warcraft
Luis Smith
Source code probably had 10 times the budget this movie had.
this one or some other one? It seems like this guy was personally offended by warcraft and confused a press junket with an indepth interview.
Dylan Sanders
Children of men was a success with the critics
Robert Fisher
Anybody else notice how the body guard looked like the one from A Clockwork Orange?
Zachary Robinson
this movie is a bore what a fucking snorefest
Julian Butler
There doesn’t need to be a grand conspiracy to make critics dislike Mute and Warcraft. Both are truly bad movies.
Noah Edwards
Bad acting kills this movie.
John Cox
The acting isn't bad, everyone just has weird German accents cause it's in Berlin
Jonathan Bennett
IT'S NOT FUCKING FAIR LADS
Liam Lee
>It's also actually a pretty good depiction of disability (the delivery kiosk and library scenes). Except the library scene doesn't make sense after the kiosk one, when it's established that the Mute isn't autistic to be afraid to ask for help. He could have just written a please-help-me note and given it to any person in the library.
Gabriel Ramirez
The movie begins with a contrived set-up of how there can be a mute guy in sci-fi Germany. From that point on plot contrivances in Mute shouldn't come as a surprise.
Thomas Sanchez
Its starts pretty slow, but it gains steam and gets more interesting as it goes on.
Theroux's character shouldn't have died, he should have just parted ways at the end. It didn't seem too in character to drive Mute all the way to France just to fall in a river.
Nathan James
Turned this on 20 minutes ago. This is one of the worst movies ever made. I legitimately feel that Bowie was lucky to have died before seeing this thing.
Ryder Reyes
Is it really a Blade Runner ripoff?
Charles Lewis
Not even close.
Ian Myers
No. It has literally nothing to do with Bladerunner apart from being set in the same sci-fi subgenre and I'm using the word "same" very loosely.
Aiden Nguyen
I fell like this story could've been told without sci-fi setting.
Oliver James
>blue haired roastie loves a nice guy who doesn't talk. truly sci-fi.
Anthony Perry
>Theroux's character shouldn't have died, he should have just parted ways at the end. He should've, it's just that the final confrontation would've worked better right after Rudd's stabbing right there in the house. Theroux is preparing to rape the child on the monitor for Rudd to watch and then Leo barges in the room and they have at it. Instead the movie meanders a bit to deflate all the tension and emotion from finding Naadirah/Rudd fight and has a weird bridge moment, where Theroux allows a 6.5ft dude stand in front of him with his back to the bridge edge.
Landon Lewis
Why did Theroux have a monitor with pedo recordings on it in the lobby of his practice free for anyone to access?
Juan Hughes
True, this would be a great fix, they could even do the sinking thing because right out the house is a pond.
Caleb Perry
I'm sitting in my bed browsing my favorite movie streaming website but I don't know what 2 watch The Commuter? Mute?
Juan Reyes
Because this is a poorly written movie with almost no logical consistency.
Jeremiah Miller
That's a good comparison user.
Brody Collins
>a psychopath acts weird
What's so unbelievable about that?
Charles Adams
Movie is full of references >MASH >Nikopol >Twin Peaks
Nathan Bell
as a huge fan of moon and source code this was absolute dreck that was somehow worse than Warcraft in every way.
>Story was absolutely terrible >Mute is barely in the movie >those stupid fucking scenes with paul ruddbeard and his (not) gay loverboy friend >Stupid fucking tone deaf script >sets up paul rudd to be some sort of psycho with no real backstory hes just CRAAAAAAAAAAAAZY jaret leto joker tier cringe >One of the stupidest scenes ive ever seen (Rudd gets angry at pedomate for fapping recordings of his daughter then IMMEDIATELY after that it tone shifts and they go out for drinks with old mate hanging out of the car) Im barely at the ending of this and i can hardly continue.
2 hours of this fucking shit
I think this movies problem is that its written/directed/produced like a pilot TV episode it literally feels very cheap despite how nice it looks visually, the sets are great but its a budget blade runner rip off.
I hate to say it but altered carbon was even better than this but not by much
1/10 for visuals, 9/10ths of the movie is just exposition and dumb pointless shit that would work fine in a TV show mini series but completely destroys the pacing of a movie like this.
Honestly its complete dreck and moon is one of my favorite sci fi's ever
sam bell has a court case on tv wher all the clones stand up and carry on, thats it like a 2 minute cameo ;(
Logan Jones
name them
Joseph Brown
>>those stupid fucking scenes with paul ruddbeard and his (not) gay loverboy friend The 'babe' stuff really bothered me.
Matthew Parker
it's a samurai jack refrence
Jack Sanders
i didnt mind it as thats how films usually depict army buddies
>sleep with the same men every day (in a non gay way just in the same room etc) I didnt mind that part but as i said it was tone deaf espeically after rudd confronts him about the pedo shit and cut to the next scene with them hanging out of the jeep like fucking zoolander wake me up before you go go is just fucking stupid Which part? Remind me i just rewatched SJ
Carson Barnes
oh Scaramouche
sorry 2 hours of that mute shit scrambled my brain
Jaxon Johnson
>I didnt mind that part but as i said it was tone deaf espeically after rudd confronts him about the pedo shit and cut to the next scene with them hanging out of the jeep like fucking zoolander wake me up before you go go is just fucking stupid What about Duck having a recording of a young girl undressing on a screen in his lobby that is free for anyone to access? Plus the inconsitency in tone doesn't just follow the pedo confrontation scene. It also precedes it as the previous scene had Theroux and Rudd do a quippy Tarantino-style torture. And then the very next scene for soem reason has Rudd searching for Theroux in his office.
John Foster
>What about Duck having a recording of a young girl undressing on a screen in his lobby that is free for anyone to access? Its funny i have a feeling the behind the scenes of this mess is more interesting than the actual movie much like tommy wiseau's the room
But yeah what the fuck its like Duncan Jones just didnt work on this script at all and made the movie with a rough draft.
>Plus the inconsitency in tone doesn't just follow the pedo confrontation scene. It also precedes it as the previous scene had Theroux and Rudd do a quippy Tarantino-style torture. And then the very next scene for soem reason has Rudd searching for Theroux in his office. Honestly this movie is so bland ive only just finished watching it and i dont remember anyones names
