Just finished watching Mute. I enjoyed it. However, I think the problem people have with Duncan Jones' dystopian universe (keep your eyes peeled for Sam Bell) is that it is too real. People write off blade runner and other dystopian movies as what ifs and enjoy them as speculative pieces of fiction. Duncan Jones' universe is too grounded and plausible. It makes people uncomfortable because it really isn't outside the realm of where we could end up. I could see the future portrayed in Mute as a distinct possibility. Other movies are a little further afield from the path our society is on and while they may be disturbing in their own right, our minds are more at ease when watching them because we don't see them happening in our lifetime. The world of Mute seems a lot more possible and is therefore a lot more unsettling. Maybe that's a fundamental piece of why critics seem to dislike it. Hits a little too close to home.

Let me say the movie isn't fantastic. But it isn't bad either. It is like a 7.5. Pretty good but not required viewing. Anyone else get this sense? The reviews I saw don't really match up with what I saw on screen so I think maybe critics are reacting to something else they didn't like, but don't want to admit.

If by "a distinct possibility" you mean exactly the world we have now with more neon lights and better artificial limb, then sure. What do you think is so scary about this movie to critics? Trannys? Gay prostitutes? Those are things that exist already.

I was thinking more about continued war, increased corporate power. More international conflict. Traveling between borders seems like an issue, even if Paul Rudd is AWOL, it seems restrictions in that sense are more elevated.

I had similar views but liked it more.
It's a movie with a budget on Netflix so critics hate it. They are essentially trained to attack them and were pulling at their chains for a chance to attack it as it released.

The movie lets the world be the world which I liked but will probably bother a lot of people because they don't explain stuff like Cactus being AWOL. It doesn't need a detailed explanation but it won't sit right with some people.

Cactus and even his fucked up friend are surprisingly likable so the dark turn will certainly rustle a lot of jimmies.

I've been struggling to think of something else like this and I think probably the closest movie I can think of is Strange Days.

I get it if you're super transphobic and it makes you uncomfortable. Or think the whole gender fluidity bullshit was too on the nose. But Jesus, that was a really well done movie. It was a better movie then Bright even if the world wasn't as interesting.

He was recording the prosthetic leg's motions to see if there were any problems. Going the extra mile as a doctor.

One of the unsettling elements of it is that we get it from the perspective of a mute amish man. He's brought up to be resistent to what is now basically his whole society and struggles with it. The story is him having to learn how to really deal with the modern world instead of just getting by, because he's guided by a purpose finally. It's also actually a pretty good depiction of disability (the delivery kiosk and library scenes).

The scene cut away before we could see the mute guy fight the muscle wielding the sexy hood ornament's leg as a weapon. This gave me blue balls. I give the movie 0 out of 10.

I think for that to work as they wanted it, the world would have to be more fleshed out and significant to the movie. But it was a nice introduction to how day to day life operated in the movie.

Duncan talked to him like he was a child who couldn't understand basic shit. It also made it clear that he ultimately aimed the Warcraft movie at the right target audience (or at least what should've been the right target audience): children.

This movie is by no means terrible, but a character driven drama with mediocre, underdeveloped characters is by definition a bad movie. Also the pedo doctor's actions were nonsensical, to say the least. I understand that the movie wanted us to believe that he felt a lot of guilt for letting Cactus die, bu the fact that he needed Leon to proclaim his crime loudly so much that he not only kept him alive but also performed a surgery on him and then drove out all the way down to some remote bridge, was hilariously contrived.

Except the library scene doesn't make sense after the kiosk one, when it's established that the Mute isn't autistic to be afraid to ask for help. He could have just written a please-help-me note and given it to any person in the library.

The movie begins with a contrived set-up of how there can be a mute guy in sci-fi Germany.
From that point on plot contrivances in Mute shouldn't come as a surprise.

Its starts pretty slow, but it gains steam and gets more interesting as it goes on.

Theroux's character shouldn't have died, he should have just parted ways at the end. It didn't seem too in character to drive Mute all the way to France just to fall in a river.

Turned this on 20 minutes ago. This is one of the worst movies ever made. I legitimately feel that Bowie was lucky to have died before seeing this thing.

He should've, it's just that the final confrontation would've worked better right after Rudd's stabbing right there in the house. Theroux is preparing to rape the child on the monitor for Rudd to watch and then Leo barges in the room and they have at it. Instead the movie meanders a bit to deflate all the tension and emotion from finding Naadirah/Rudd fight and has a weird bridge moment, where Theroux allows a 6.5ft dude stand in front of him with his back to the bridge edge.

Why did Theroux have a monitor with pedo recordings on it in the lobby of his practice free for anyone to access?

True, this would be a great fix, they could even do the sinking thing because right out the house is a pond.

I think this movies problem is that its written/directed/produced like a pilot TV episode it literally feels very cheap despite how nice it looks visually, the sets are great but its a budget blade runner rip off.

I hate to say it but altered carbon was even better than this but not by much

1/10 for visuals, 9/10ths of the movie is just exposition and dumb pointless shit that would work fine in a TV show mini series but completely destroys the pacing of a movie like this.
