Dazed and Confused > Slacker > > Before Trilogly > School of Rock > Walking Life > Scanner Darkly

still Slacker

Slacker > Tape > School of Rock > Befores > the rest

Slacker, followed by Dazed, followed by A Scanner Darkly, followed by Everybody Wants Some!!, followed by Waking Life. Haven't seen the Befores yet. I love him.

Before Trilogy or School of Rock

The JFK conspiracy autist reminded me of Sup Forums.

before trilogy (but first one is the best desu)

>Best Linklater film?
Have to say “Slacker” because there are no movie stars in it. It just moves from character to character and the real “star” of the picture is the city of Austin or the weirdness of Austin. I think this film caused a lot of people to move there and I don’t think you can say that about a lot of films. It captured a very real feel of the place, at the time. Now, the place is awful. Full of Silicone Valley douchebags and SXSW wannabes. It could be said that “Slacker” was a leader in the city’s demise and that’s a powerful film.

a scanner darkly

The movie was a very negative portrait of Austin though. Nobody had anything going on in their lives.

I lived in Austin from 1998 to 2001, and it was obvious this was happening even then. I moved, then I returned to Austin in 2016 and was shocked to see how much more it changed over that time. The place is intolerable now. Traffic, wall to wall people, high cost of living. Everything seems to have a premium cost attached because "lol Austin."

>The movie was a very negative portrait of Austin though. Nobody had anything going on in their lives.
That’s your take on it. A lot more people clicked with those characters. Notice how “based” those characters were. Most of them were comfortable in their weirdness and they owned it. The odd man out, in the film, would be “chad”.

It's my take but it seemed to also be the only takeaway I can fathom. All of the characters are drifting and it is not a sustainable lifestyle. Look at the one guy who tries to rob the old anarchist's house. We don't know much about him before he tries to rob, and it's possible he was a similarly slacked youth who thought it was cool to go through life doing nothing. Or the young woman who jumps from worthless guy to worthless guy to her friends' mutual chagrin. There are very few people in the movie who "get it".

What about this? Is this accurate about Texas?

Yeah, it’s on it’s way to becoming the next San Fran. Sky high cost of living and human fecal matter on the streets. The rooted Austin businesses, that have been there for 30+ years are closing or moving out of town because the taxes/rent is too high and chain/retail stores are moving in..going to miss living off of South 1st and walking to an Art Gallery opening party, going to dinner, and then catching a live band on South Congress, then walking back home. The 90’s.

you were part of the problem and you don't even realize it.

>What about this? Is this accurate about Texas?
Very much so.

remove an hour and slacker would be good
holy shit it never ends

Slacker is perfect. Staple your lip

How? I paid my rent, tipped 20%, supported local bands, businesses. The stuff that ruined it was the introduction of big, outside money. SXSW, the success of Dell computer, Whole Foods going national, all this brought in people who were used to paying 3k rent and 500k houses. That changed the landscape.

What is really horrifying is the Austin - San Antonio corridor. 35 is nearly bumper to bumper traffic. A lot of people, early on, left Austin for San Antonio thinking that would be 'the next Austin.' Now the whole central region is built up, and Texas is such a whore when it comes to getting business and people to move there, then the reality sinks in, "Holy shit it's like 110 degrees and you have to drive everywhere to get anywhere." I think it's funny how many people in Texas think it's reasonable to drive more than an hour to commute, or go out to eat even. I used to like living in Texas, but that place is mostly a hell hole now.

remove an hour and it would be good

Yeah, when I lived in San Antonio, (which is still better than Austin traffic) my daily commute was 60 miles.

I meet people where I live now, and they always seem surprised when they learn I lived in Austin from '98 to '01. They give me social credit, like they think I'm cool or something, just because it's Austin. What really brought down Austin was this sense it was a cool place to live, especially once that idea became mainstream. More and more people moved there, the culture was watered down, and people were trying to create these 'artificial Austin experiences'. The very idea of having Leslie's picture is evidence of this. That dude was like this living 'Austin experience' tourist trap.

I worked in Austin in 2016 briefly and constantly met people who were like, "This is an Austin thing, that is an Austin thing." I felt like pointing out to them even when I lived there the idea of an 'Austin thing' was already dying. I totally agree Slacker made Austin appear attractive to a particular population, and ironically killed the very culture is captured in the film. The people in the film could not possibly survive there now. Too expensive. Police are too aggressive. Even the drag rats on Guadalupe are not there anymore.

Waking Life

>ironically killed the very culture is captured in the film
Yeah, I said that in a previous post. I don’t see how, by living there from 87-97, I was part of the problem. I didn’t live there because, muh cool. I lived there because I had a job there. I could afford rent and girlfriend. Why move? I’ve since lived other places; San Antonio, Ft Worth, Corpus Christi...all job related. I would consider SA or Dallas/FtWorth again, but not CC. Currently, back in “Austin”; it’s far, far north (basically Cedar Park) so I almost never see the city. Too nuts. The places I used to rent now sell for 300-400k fo a 1000sq ft house. The job keeps me here another year, then it will be shopping time again.

unironically this

>it’s far, far north (basically Cedar Park)

ah none of the perks of austin and still almost as much traffic
