Germany is the only financially and economically sane western country in the Union (with Netherlands) while being the most powerful economy and industry.
Until 2008 the french were the captain of the Union, but we were not really economically interventionnists, the main thing we did was opposing the US over Iraq (which won us surrender jokes for the next 20 years) and that's pretty much everything.
Then 2008 happened and everyone supported a huge hit in Europe, everyone except Germany.
Since then the continent looks up to the german model and relies on decision taken by them.
Problem is if the north is okay with that (since they have more or less the same model), the south isn't and has extreme difficulty to adapt it.
