If it wasn't for the huge powercut in new york in 1977 where there was looting, most of the mics and turntables, etc that were needed for hip hop would have never made it into the future stars hands.
I think there's a documentary about it on youtube or it might have been a book, I can't recall.
To be honest I think there's been a net benefit on all music because of the production techniques used in hip hop, so I'd call it even.

The annoying thing about rap is that it should have been dead in the mid 2000s. In the modern world music usually has a 10 year lifespan than something new takes over. Even though this statement is annoying mu types but music officially died in 1997 (same year Napster become popular) and all we have be getting since is soulless remakes. Hip hop is here to stay because 'remixes' are a part of the genre so it can last forever.

Hip-hop isn't a subgenre like hair metal, grunge rock, or outlaw country. It's an umbrella term for several different types of music subgenres. Furthermore, rap itself is just a single, albeit large, technique within hip-hop.
