lets settle this once and for all Sup Forums
is the hatred for breaking bad's skylar white justified? or is it just sexism and misogyny?
Skylar White
yes
American women look ugly
is she just hated because she is fat and ugly? that is a good reason for it but i feel like there is something more there
It’s not just sexism and misogyny, it’s mostly because of viewers who want to experience the show as moral escapism instead of a morality tale.
Yes and yes. Skylar had the thankless job of being Walt's foil. The audience wants Walt to do badass shit. Skylar wants Walt to not be a dangerous criminal. Her motivations are understandable, but she's hateable by design.
In the beginning, the viewer sees Walter White as a downtrodden, but brilliant man cursed with a cruel fate. He sacrifices everything and becomes a criminal to secure a future for his family. This contrasts with Skylar's selfish nature. She ignores her husband and seemingly doesn't appreciate his brilliant mind or his role as a man. This culminates in her fucking Ted and giving him an the money that Walter has worked so hard for. At this point, it's not hard to see why she's desliked.
But by the end of the series we see their roles reversed. Walter is revealed as an evil, cruel, egomaniac, and Skylar takes steps to protect her family from the monster. It's wild.
You know, she was way sexier in Deadwood.
She didn't have to be a cunt but she chose to anyway.
I mean she made mistakes but she was no worse than Walt himself. They honesty deserve each other
I mean, who wasn't?
I recently watched through breaking bad for the second time and it was way easier to see her side of things after admittedly hating her the first time around
I'd say its not justified but the backlash isn't entirely because of sexism either.
Even Vince admitted to making Skylar too cold and unlikable in the pilot. First impressions are incredibly important to shaping an audiences attitude towards a character and can be hard to shift after the fact.
Holy shit, you fucking idiots, that's not her name. It isn't even pronounced the same. Learn to spell.
its not sexism, shes just an awful piece of shit of a wife
starting from when she completely ignores everything walt wants from the first season, along with the halfassed ebay handjob
she has no respect for walt at all despite him being a supposed chemistry genius working two jobs to take care of his family while she sits around the house doing nothing
hypocritical, only wants to listen to people when they agree with her
constantly plays the victim to get what she wants
cheats on walt as "revenge"
smokes while pregnant just to piss off walt (note that walt jr has cerebral palsy which can be caused by, you guessed it, smoking while pregnant)
thats not sexism
It doesn't rhyme with "mylar"; don't spell it that way.
Skylar is somewhat complex.
Jesse is much more simple (and much more extreme) in how much of a horrible, spiteful, destructive, emotional, incompetent, selfish cunt he is.
Skylar and her actions are disagreeable but largely rationalisable, and certainly in comparison to Jesse.
fuck off autist no one cares about the spelling of a fictional housewife
>Skylar
Fuck Skylar whore.
I've seen plenty of people spell it with an a so I just assumed she had a strange spelling. I actually did assume that it was Skyler in the first place.
I just finished re-watching it all for the first time since I watched the finale live. Skylar doesn't deserve all the hate she gets, and most of it stems from people not having the ability to project themselves into her shoes, since Walt is the main protagonist and you want to side with him and feel sympathetic towards him, but Skylar did nothing wrong. Maybe cheating with Ted, but that was about it. She got dealt a shit hand, he lied to her about everything, put them all in danger for his own ego. She deserved better.
Also I don't care what anyone says, it has to be the best final season / finale of a show in existence. Most shows fade out and become worse over time, BB did the opposite somehow and had possibly the best finale for any show I've ever seen, it's just perfect.
>BB did the opposite somehow and had possibly the best finale for any show I've ever seen, it's just perfect
agreed
i still think i am justified in my hatred of her though
I don't really think so. Skylar cheating on her husband was wrong imo, i think if you want to have a relationship with someone else you should just commit to ending it. But it was at least understanable, her husband was becoming this tyrannical figure that forcefully distanced her. He essentially ended their relationship already. She fucked up with the money too but honestly under a vast majority of circumstances in the show this wouldve been fine. I think it really all came from how much she colossally fucked over everyone with taking the money.
Jesse pisses me off so much in the earlier seasons. He puts Walt and everyone else in danger with his actions, from the first episode when he brings Emilio to the RV. He's the one that essentially ruins the relationship Gus and Walt had which was working fine until Jesse basically fucked up everything, especially after everything Walt did to get Jesse back into the lab cooking and get him a solid income. I mean this was before any serious strife between the two.
Jane would have gotten Jesse killed, so Walt saved his life by letting her die as well. Did she deserve it? Maybe, maybe not, but she got him on Heroin and started him down a darker path.
He becomes more sympathetic after he's made into a slave and you want him to have a new life after that, but he's not blameless.
That said, Walt made him kill Gale and he had to live with that for the rest of his life. He poisoned Brock which was just plain evil of a thing to do, but Jesse still over-reacted to that and he should have been far more angry about Gale in comparison.
Honestly, one of the things that makes breaking bad so great is that we still discuss these characters to this day, that there's still things to discuss is crazy.
>Finds out husband is doing shady shit to pay for niceties in their lives
>Has perfect chance to hand him over to the authorities as he breaks in
>Doesn't anyway, cucks him, psychologically torments him, and keeps him from family
>Then accepts money later on and launders it
Basic woman
The problem with skylar is she spends the entire show freaking out over nothing, then when she stops freaking out over nothing and starts contributing, fails totally.
it isn't sexist to hate an annoying female character. she was a huge bitch and cheated on her dying husband. she didn't even try to understand where walt was coming from. granted, walt was full of shit, but still.
Probably doesn't deserve hate, but her problem is she's just plain not likable in any way. Even all the faggots who can't even spell her correctly can only whiteknight, they don't give a genuine ounce of a shit about her because there's nothing to care about.
Skyler was a plot device, there to be however the plot called for her to be but never someone to care about because zero effort was put into creating a connection between her and the audience to warrant the sympathy they probably though Skyler should have got just for being Walt's wife and a mother.
I think she was just simply miscast. She looks like a bitch and does bitchy things. Marie is a sympathetic bitch. They should have found someone better to play Skylar.
I think the issues had more to do with the extensive rewrites during the writer's strike. Walt's arcs were changed on several levels. Jessie didn't fucking die, etc. But they didn't adjust skylar's arc sufficiently. Like if happy-go-lucky walt came home from his legit fugue-state as gus fring because he got jessie killed because he's a dumbass, THEN skylar's entire arc makes sense.
Jesse was originally planned to be killed?
Vince also writes for television. He wrote season by season. He even admitted that he had no idea what Walt was going to do with the M60 machine gun when he wrote it in, and that was only the first half of the season before he wrote the second half. I don't think the strike had anything to do with it.
Pretty common knowledge. Also the color of his clothing hinted at it. I think it's yellow that foreshadows someone is going to die or something. Breaking Bad was basically written like an improv.
Fuck off, season 5 was awful compared to 3 & 4.
>I don't think the strike had anything to do with it.
The writer's strike literally invented AMC's mid-season break format and forced the cast and crew back to the table to rewrite stuff because they couldn't use anything written by union members.
you are spacing your lines like you are from some website i cant talk about because its "spam" l333r333ddddd11111ttt

>she didn't even try to understand where walt was coming from
This. Walt didn't lie to Skyler because he was just a bad husband who wouldn't be honest with his wife, it's because he knew Skyler wasn't the understanding type and he'd only lose by telling her the truth. Of course Walt was still wrong to do what he did and Skyler had all the right to put her foot down (honestly she'd be more respectable if she had, instead of lacking any real convention), but he didn't earn sympathy points by refusing to empathize with him. It's no coincidence the power dynamic slowly changes and Walt is in control while Skyler is the one feeling powerless and not having her feelings and opinions considered.
In a way, Skyler was humbled by her experiences.
*conviction
*she didn't
*blocks your path*
Its both.
it's the result of the lack of critical thought and true empathy
sexism and misogyny. skyler is a passive aggressive coward whos only real purpose seems to be to whine and causes messes, all hallmarks of womanhood
She didn't really do that much crazy that I couldn't see a person in her situation doing. Actually hell, she went further than any reasonable wife probably would. They likely wouldn't decide to help cover up your meth cooking husbands deeds and launder the cash he makes
>He's the one that essentially ruins the relationship Gus and Walt had which was working fine until Jesse basically fucked up everything, especially after everything Walt did to get Jesse back into the lab cooking and get him a solid income.
How did Jesse screw this up?
if it was just "misogyny", kim in BCS would also be hated but most fans really like her
turns out loyalty and taking personal responsibility are desirable traits in women
she smoked while pregnant
she wasnt properly banging walt at the beginning of the season
she rightfully didnt want her kids around the drugs or that lifestyle, but then after helping walt out, she took the money and gave it to her boss that she was fucking.
she is a self righteous bitch that complains about the money walt makes then used it how she needed to a certain degree
he goes out to murder gus's men forcing walt to choose between letting jesse get acid barreled or keeping his good relationship with gus
lydia was the only likable female character
Even after all that shit with Jessie and killing the thugs Gus was willing to let them work, just with extra supervision, but that gets screwed up anyway because Walt decides he has to kill Gus, which granted yeah, he threatens his family and shit, but Walt still could have sucked it up and settled with what he had, but it turns into this gotta kill him before he kills my family thing.
Nothing Mike said to Walt before he died was untrue. I'll admit Jessie didn't help but the fallout between them and Gus can't be attributed to only one or the other.
> breaking bad season 5: electric boogaloo
I liked the way they ended it, but introducing the Nazis and Meth Damon all of the sudden after wrapping up a seasons-long arc just felt weird, I didn't care about them nearly as much as I did Gus.
I remember the episode Ozymandias being a wild ride when I first saw it on TV though
Never got why people pretend they're so cultured for liking a show about druggies and violence and sex/tiddies and what have you. I think it's just to justify their pleb tastes to themselves.
all tv is plebeian by nature
I think ultimately no matter what crazy shit Walt did, people just can't accept cheating.
It isn't equal. It's just selfish desire. "You make drugs, im going to fuck this guy ive wanted to fuck for ages anyway and use your drugs as an excuse for that"
I believe they're called paragraphs
as a redpilled MGTOW advocate, she's a fucking useless trash whore just like my mom
Honestly I sided with Skylar when I first watched but I still thought she was a pain in the ass. Apart from the cheating on my boy Walt of course. Walt did take shit too far.
Meth Damon shooting Jesse's GF and the scene with all the nazis standing in Holly's bedroom made the nazis scary mofos
It's good to see someone who gets it
While Skyler is really hateable, most of what she does is very reasonable if you'd learn your husband is trying to become a meth kingping
The only thing that was completely nonsense was fucking Ted
To be honest, I felt that that scene was a bit too much
As if they still had to establish that BB is a show in which brutal things can and will happen
And that they still had to paint the nazi's as bad guys even though killing Hank would have been more than enough
Who hates her? I thought she did a great job.
>Be me, try out BB
>Watched the pilot, mmm this is ok.
>Skyler scenes happen, get so annoyed, delete all other episodes of BB
>no regrets
Mate, in english read doesn't even rhyme with read
She could have just as easily been milf fap fodder. Instead she was that bitch aunt you would like to slug in the face.
>This contrasts with Skylar's selfish nature. She ignores her husband and seemingly doesn't appreciate his brilliant mind or his role as a man.
>she doesn't fellate him both physically and verbally 24/7 so she is a selfish bitch
>conveniently forgetting the part where she served him divorce papers and he refused to sign them, using her reluctance to turn him in as a way to trap her into their already loveless marriage
Yes because her response to her husband who's dying of cancer and going batshit crazy for it is to not help him with realistic means it's to also go batshit crazy and do things just to spite him but remain in secrecy about making meth. She's not the moral part of the show she's just as dumb as walt is
if it really meant that much to her she would turn him in, she was obviously just trying to get at walt
>Breaking Bad
>loved and watched obsessively when it was on
>the moment it finished lost all desire to ever see anything to do with it again
Please explain this phenomenon, I know I'm not the only one.
>is the hatred for breaking bad's skylar white justified?
Yes. She's a cunt
>or is it just sexism and misogyny?
no. Otherwise people would hate Carmella
Gus planning to kill Hank was understandably unacceptable to Walt. Why does he have to suck it up?
No.
On the re-watch, she's much more sympathetic. It becomes increasingly obvious what a narcissistic, selfish, delusional jackass Walt actually is.
It's made pretty clear in the first few episodes that Walt's an entitled man-child who never helps out around the house or makes any of the major decisions - through sheer passive indifference, not because of Skyler's nagging. Skyler nags but Walt's just not present. Not interested. They have an empty, sham marriage before he gets cancer because he's simply not there as an equal partner.
It was a good show, but it was pretty much story driven. It kept people thinking "what will happen next?". That's why it was fun to talk about it. Everyone had theories, and was patiently waiting for the conclusion.
For this reason, once you know how the story ends, it loses its charm. It has no rewatchability value for this reason.
This explains why The Sopranos is the opposite, it's about the characters not about the story, you can rewatch it many times and it doesn't stop to be interesting. You can still discuss indivual episodes, the show isn't about "what will happen next" but rather "what's happening here". I think this is why you can't really binge watch the sopranos, the connection between each episode isn't as clear as it is in Breaking Bad.
I really like Better Call Saul because it's a good sweet spot, we kinda want to see how it ends. But the show itself is more about the characters, this is why you hear some brainlets say "nothing happens in that show". Yes it does, just not in the same way as it did in BB
She always looks like somebody put a wig onto Woody Harrelson and I've never been able to get that fucking image out of my head.
walt was a complete fuckhead every time he lied. I got second hand embarrassment watching him try to explain away the second cell phone.
even his own son called him out on his bullshit.
>she does turn him in
>Sup Forums hates on her because she's a heartless narc bitch who doesn't care about anyone but herself
Galaxia?
What led Hank to Gus' trail again? Something with Los Pollos yeah? Then the laundry mat.
She was absolutely unbearable, to the point she actually ruined the show for me, when it was "skyler time" I used to skip the scenes.
>Sup Forums has no problem when the MC fucks around and shoots people and the woman shuts her mouth
shocking
Its justified BECAUSE of sexism and misogyny.
Roasties btfo.
this guy loves soap operas
She lost her high ground when she went into business with Walt. She may have been annoying in early seasons, but she was completely in the right.
At least she's honest with herself
this
It's justified in that the viewers don't care whether or not Walt is doing the right thing, we wanted to see how far he would go and she was an obstacle in the way of that.
She was completely justified in everything she did once Walt started down his path.
this
Skyler did nothing wrong except for fucking ted
and he was tarted
justified, just not why you think
Poorly written character is poorly written.
S A V A G E
She's annoying, naggy, and sometimes clingy.
So, yes.
the redditpranos absolutely BTFO
It's sad because you genuinely don't understand what you want to be doing is cancerous.
>implying Sup Forums can tell good writing if it stepped on its scrotum
>saying weight gain is a valid reason to hate her
Congrats, you're a sexist.
how's highschool?
This just sounds like giving in to hype and rolling with the hype train.
If anything it's actually better to watch it now, now that the OMFG DID YOU SEE THE LAST EPISODE HOLY SHIT-ness has died off because you'll actually receive it better.
Watching scenes on YT and threads like this honestly make me want to rewatch it though, it's been a few years for me.
>relied on cliffhangers
>trashy pulp
>poorly written
What an insanely dumb image
