Did people freak out over CHamber of Secrets back when it was released?

It's pretty dark and creepy for a kids movie, especially compared to the first one.

Yeah I remember being slightly uneasy when watching it
Was 7 at the time

They should make a life at hoghwarts series with a just like us girl protagonist. Just frumpy magic school camp and occassionally some plot.
It would make hella bread

I'd read the book before but it was pretty scary for 10-year-old me. Suddenly there's blood everywhere, serial killings, and giant fucking spiders. The Basilisk scene where Harry's hiding in the tunnels was tense as fuck

Nah, it was slight step up from the first movie, but anyone who knew anything about the books would have expected that. The official MPAA language upgrade was "some scary moments" -> "scary moments". PoA was kind of a turning point though. The "scary" turned into "frightening moments" in the official rating. It was a lot heavier for a PG film and darker in tone, and a lot of parents were concerned because the director's last project was rated R.

>dark and creepy
>literally nobody dies
>b-b-but muh spiders! muh snakes!

"No!"

yeah but it wasn't so bad, my dad showed me Alien when I was like 7 a week before seeing Chamber of Secrets.

Chamber of Secrets Hermione is best Hermione

the third one was the one that spooked me the most, but me and just about every kid had a crush on emma after watching it

Rememeber thinking it was rated R back whem I was kid, children being "petrified" made me feel scared for some reason

I don't think it's that scary.
The third one is the one that caught me by surprise. The Dementor shit kept me awake at night for a few days.

Whenever I look back on it, CoS was really the "children's intro to Horror" film.

Azkaban is far and away the best (and darkest) of the movies.

That's what happens when you let Alfonso Cuaron direct.

I think it was widely known even at that stage that the Harry Potter franchise got darker with each new instalment. Even if you hadn't read the books most parents were aware of the fact things got darker, HP was always in the news and you couldn't escape it. The 4th book was already out when this film got released.

now post the photoshop

that plus sirus black from the paper trying to hunt him down was too spooky

>literally nobody dies
have you even seen the movie retard

...

PoA is way darker. CoS is bog standard kids adventure shit. You never even see the Basilisk attack anyone, just the aftermath. Then a book gets stabbed I guess. Did the movie even have Harry's shoulder get pierced?

PoA had werewolves, dog attacks, Hippogryph maulings, a supposed murderer stalking Harry, horrifying unstoppable happiness-sucking specters, and the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises. Each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>a-at least the books were good though r-right
"No!"
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was

i found the death of professor quirrell to be worst

Who died?

Hagrid's chickens?

Nobody actually does die though, they just get petrified and get cured at the end. It was a kid's version of a serial murder case; people were attacked left right and center, but nobody really died because that'd be too much for a kid's book

>"No!"
every time

>posting edited pasta without the image
oh you sneaky cunt, took me a few lines

Trigger made Little Witch Academia and it's basically that. Anime not Sup Forums, but it is literally what you described.

sneaky as hell, nice job

Despite being darker, nobody freaked out because it was still the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

the pasta was already posted

What's with these Harry Potter threads being posted so much? Are there so many fucking soyboys on this board?

I take these over the endless capeshit and star wars threads, though I agree one thread at a time should be enough instead of four

80s kid movies were much more intense than Harry fucking potter you millennial pussies. Ever seen Robocop? You dont know what scary/dark is.

>tfw no more comfy Harry Potter marathon weekends on ABC family

Harry Potter is legendary. Take it easy on the underage

Literally the last good Harry Potter movie. Something, somewhere went wrong after this.

I'm surprised people in these threads don't stream the movies and watch them together, seems exactly the sort of thing they'd do

it's the tumblr cancer that came for star wars 8 and a happa manchild named zachary

I used to like the earlier movies as a kid but now I can't bear the series anymore because of the preppy libshit atmosphere surrounding its creator and fans.

if you found that scary at 10 years old then you were/are a pussy

Little Witch >>>> Harry Potter
Better plot, better universe, better characters. Also the dynamic between Akko and Diana is a fucking massive improvement over Harry and Draco.

Yeah I thought it was dark but in a cool and deep way. At the end of the day it's no different from kid anime like dragonball or naruto or fullmetal alchemist, in terms of edgyness.

There needs to be more of those kinds of threads on Sup Forums desu

iirc when I was 7 I cried not because I was afraid but because I felt bad for the basilisk.
I always felt bad for monsters for some reason. Cried in Godzilla because Godzilla died, cried in ROTJ because Jabba died, etc.

Why can't you grow up? is it the lack of father figure?

i cant believe there's 9 or 10 of these pieces of fucking shit

Robocop was a kids movie?

>I was way cooler than you when I was 10!!
Do you realise how pathetic you're being?

Sorta

It was, can't you see how campy it was?

I'm scared of acid and radioactive waste to this very day because of 80s movies, even though I've literally spilled acid on myself and was fine.

There was really a change of tone in the movies, between 2 and 3. And I don't mean that in a good way. 3 and 4 look like older movies than 1 and 2, wouldn't you agree?

first one was scarier
that scene where voldemort's face is revealed was horrifying to me
also the scene in the woods where cloaked voldemort appears out of fucking nowhere

even as a kid the harry potter movies seemed somehow trashy and low-quality compared with LotR (the films were being released about a month apart so they invited comparison).

1 and 2 have that timeless (though very much pre-digital era) sort of "glowing" atmosphere. Very nostalgia and warm. 3 and 4 are more indebted to Hollywood blockbuster styles of the time in their pacing, haircuts, etc., lighting, etc.

It genuinely feels like HP and LOTR are about 10 years apart because of the difference in quality.
