It's a combination of the US being influential in world politics (through being one of the four nations with veto powers at the UN), the world economy (through the petro-dollar), widespread military bases (to maintain the petro-dollar) and it being a sort of spectator sport.
The more intertwined your country is with the US for any of the reasons (minus the spectator sport part), the more logical it is for people to take an interest in it. Seeing as Canada and the US are the largest trading partners in the world, I'd be foolish NOT to closely follow the goings-on south of the border. If your union falls apart, ours will likely follow suit.

That said, lots of people I know on social media have uneducated strong opinions - which is probably what you're really driving at. I had a conversation last week with an anti-Trump French person, who didn't even understand the electoral college system.
This is it. It's the MSM here. I remember first time noticing in the Bush-vs-Gore election. There was no way Bush could ever win according to the media here. They didn't explain any reasons about why anyone sane might want to vote for Bush but then Gore lost. The explanation for the result was then supposedly just that Americans are stupid, evil, etc.
That's when I started wondering what's really going on as it didn't make sense that everyone's retarded. An easier explanation was that the MSM presented the image that they liked best, and US voters had gotten a completely different image presented by their MSM.
The thing is Kraut, is that Americans have an incredible love for debate that's very absent here. In the US if I tell people positive things about Trump, they think about it. More often I've heard, "Wow that's interesting I've never heard of that before".

Honestly European news is far more informative than American news. Information is often twisted to form a narrative that "fits" within a message the news networks are trying to portray... not for corporate interests or anything like that but to simply attract viewership.

It depends where you are in germany, there are huge differnces of how people operate. It's not stupidity why Most europeans won't understand the Trump phenomenon, how should they the entire context is missing (Obama administration, the social unrest, etc.). In recent years Europa has changed drastically and our culture has become much more influenced by the current (((American))) culture, so to find similar results as in the US isn't really that unspected.
It's a lot more likely to have a traditional war where nuclear weapons aren't used, than a nuclear war. After some years of war you can start your heatenings about the nuclear weapons if it seems like there's no end to the traditional war (or if either america or russia is being chased to a corner), and I'll be long dead before that
