The elves of the First Age always seemed more stereotypically "Jewish" to me. They jealously guard and covet treasures, whereas the Dwarves treat them more as a commodity to be traded or gifted.

Dwarves come from Germanic mythology. They were the great miners and blacksmiths.

The reasons this was such a prevalent motif in Germanic mythos, is that they used to send midgets into the small mineshafts, that couldnt be accessed by normal sized men.

Then eventually there were even colonies of midgets living inside of mines, where large fold couldnt get to.
