And what people don't realize is that MoS is like that as a direct consequence of Superman Returns. WB was scared shitless by Superman Returns underperforming and people criticizing it as slow, boring, mopey, etc., so WB overcorrected by making sure that MoS would be a non-stop torrent of loud, obnoxious destruction porn.

And ironically the 'thematically rich' and 'adult' take on Superman that brainless 15-year-olds regard MoS as is actually a better description of Superman Returns, which dares to go places almost no modern blockbuster does. From the perspective of 2018, Returns' introspective, melancholy tone and its willingness to foreground character over plot and action are remarkable. It was a movie that truly asked what the "meaning" of the Superman character was in an intelligent, moving way.

I was eagerly waiting for the sequel of Superman Returns because I wanted the boy who threw the piano (and his relationship with Superman and Clark) expanded. I also want Marsden's and Routh's characters' friendship expanded. Make an alternate DCU or erase latest DCU or whatever I just want a sequel to Superman Returns with Routh, Marsden and that boy.

I read conflicting reasons for that. One was that Welling didn't want a "full-on" shot of him in the costume because he feared the sort of typecasting that stalled the careers of previous Superman actors. The second theory was that the show's producers didn't have complete licensing rights to a live action Superman, which to my mind sounds iffy because they had licensing rights to everything other aspect of the Superman mythos.

So, who knows.
