Can a very very smart user explain the difference, pleaaase?!?!?

>best Casting Couch

>Best Bane impression

Since when has this been a category?!?

sound editing is basically creating the sound in the background

sound mixing is controlling the level of all sounds

Basically the Chad Sound Editor and the Virgin Sound Mixer.

Google, there are lots of sites explaining the difference. It's not really a category people aren't meant to understand outside unless they work in the industry.

so sound mixer... adjusts the volume. lmfao

bad sound mixers ruin movies though, I fucking hate Nolan's sound mixing

Since he put on the mask

Those categories mean something to somebody out there.

This. also its not as easy as you think OP

After he became big and a guy

A writer ... writes words down. lmfao
A director ... says things. lmfao

Editing to Star Wars
Mixing to Dunkirk
You can bet on it.

Imagine the Omaha Beach scene with no sense of direction or distance to any of the sound effects, that's what the mixer is responsible for.

How can a glorified technician of a director make movies that sound consistently that awful? If you're just going to be aggressively, boringly technical all the time, at least go all the way. Fuck Nolan's sound mixing.

Drone sound 3 just has tons of reverb or am I missing something?

He apparently loves things loud

I have a friend who was nominated for an sound editing Emmy a year or two ago. He was so hyped.
I care more about the the technical Oscars than the big six. Much less politicking going on. Just the industry telling their colleagues that of all the people who did what they do, they were the best this year. It's much more wholesome.

Editing is pacing, arrangement etc. Just like a video editor arranges footage
Mixing is dynamic control, equalisation, harmonics, stereo imagery, effects etc

No it's not, editing is sound creation, by recording or synthesis. There's no analogy to be made with video editing.

no...he's literally adjusting sound volume

And writers are literally just writing words down.

You underestimate the effect of sound volume on a movie. Certain sound effects being too loud or too quiet have a massive impact on what makes a great movie scene.

Wow, really important to have both. Might as well have best camera movement and best camera placement.

It'd be more like having a color correcting award in addition to cinematography which I think would be reasonable but fairly low on the list of "Oscars that should exist". As it stands, coloring, a hugely important part of filmmaking, is just kinda lumped in with cinematography despite being a different discipline.

Even if it was just adjusting volume, which it isn't, controlling the dynamic range to be impactful but consistent across two hours of audio is massively important and hard to do right

Yeah why isn't there a color correction awards???

I think it's mostly because the average Academy member has even less of an opinion on best coloring than they do on best sound editing. Coloring is a lot like mastering in music recording. Everyone knows it's important but most people consider it an impenetrable black magic.

How many of you plebs actually have surround sound?

...

>pour years into writing the best screenplay
>lose to some Oscar bait about gays

>select your favorite winamp preset
>win an Oscar

Pshhhh... nothing personnel kid

>surround
>not atmos
Might as well mute movies and just read captioning.

>Best Sound Mixing
Probably Dunkirk, that movie had a lot of dynamic sounds to deal with and never was the dialogue indecipherable nor did my immersion get ruined by (what to me, an audio engineer) would consider obvious compression/mixing techniques
>Best Sound Editing
Stephen King's IT, without a doubt had the coolest sound design. Pennywise's voice was incredible.

kek should've done you research first, brainlet

Proof that the Academy doesn't know shit about sound perhaps but IT wasn't nominated.
Sound editing:
>Baby Driver
>BR2049
>Dunkirk
>Shape of Water
>Star Wars
I loved Shape of Water in general but I wasn't blown away by the sound editing. I'm leaning towards Star Wars but I wouldn't be that surprised if Dunkirk sweeps sound or Baby Driver gets sound editing.
Dunkirk is getting mixing though.

because the colors get fucked most of the time in blu rays
