Every mega successful comedian spent a decade or more as an under and non-appreciated gem in comedy club basements, then headliners, then maybe a budget tv show or a half hour comedy hour.

Then they blow the fuck up and get big. They can and will fill out basketball stadiums. A 3500 seat theater is a quick sell out so they go bigger.

Then people get really, really into their stuff including the stuff it took decades to hone. When they don't serve up the 10/10 funny in their next special, the backlash begins.

Once the backlash begins they either take their money and run (like Dane Cook or Carlos Mencia) or weather the storm and continue being a working comedian with a solid but less than peak crowd numbers (Larry the Cable Guy, Jim Gaffigan).
