Annoying and unlikable, but actually well-written characters
...
the point of his character is to present an anti war strawman. he is intentionally wimpy, weak and clumsy.
The psycho bitch from the Mist
Also the psycho bitch from Misery
Also the psycho bitch from Rose Red
....hey wait a minute what did King mean by this???
Kai Winn from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Louise Fletcher was the perfect choice to play this narcissistic charlatan.
...
...
his wife
upham was probably the most decent person in the squad other than the medic. when you grow up you'll realize this.
...
and maybe the most relatable
but being a decent person was not that helpful in the middle of war
DUDE MURDERING A POW IS MY REDEMPTIVE MOMENT LOL
What the fuck was Spielberg thinking
>what did king mean by this?
mommy is a big meanie head!
>well written
>fubar is in context some part of slang he doesn't undertstand but still tells everyone about searching for it in manual to drive a point to audience
...
This is unrelated but the part where the German guy stabs the Jewish dude to death was so disturbing to me as a child that it's been etched in my mind ever since I watched it. I can't forget it and still think about it occasionally and it still disturbs me
>tfw still occasionely wake up screaming 'UPHAM! UPHAM!' in the middle of the night..
this
completely ruined the character
I thought that jew kind of had it coming. We had an annoying smart ass city jew type when I deployed to Camp Bucca. Nobody was sad when he took an Rkg 3 and came home in parts.
Ladies and gentleman I present the pinnacle of the amerimutt military
It isn't a "redemptive moment." It proves he's even more of a coward by only having the balls to shoot his enemy when he's an unarmed prisoner. It's totally within his piece of shit character and why it's finely written.
Are you me?
hot, not annoying
Its a masterful moment. Its haunting, horrifying, brutal and intimate. Speilberg knows what he's doing. Also fuck the "hurr durr SPR is nothing without the Dday scene" crowd
Spielberg almost pushed it to far the feelings I get from watching that scene come from a place I don't want to be in
There's nothing well written about him. This user is correct
He is a straw and propaganda character who is redeemed of his cowardice by executing a prisoner after the battle is over. I will never not be fucking infuriated at his character
It is a redemptive moment. That is the intent. The music swells heroically and upham stands tall with a heroic smolder on his face. Spielberg showed he's entirely out of touch with humanity in that moment, thinking people would accept the redemption
>muh jews! How dare he not care about the jews! 6 million of them were killed by the nazis you know!
...
We were supposed to feel that a major injustice took place as a jewish person died at the hands of a evil Waffen SS man. Except the evil SS man kills him in a justifiable way as two combatants in war. It was poorly done.
>Posts Sup Forums meme out of context
You're likely a butthurt neocon upset that a soldier doesn't care for God's chosen people. The mutt with Israeli flag meme doesn't make sense when user doesn't seem to like them.
OY VEY
I don't care about you being anti Semitic you just sound like an idiot
>I totally don't care about antisemitism but your lack of caring for the most precious people in the world (the Jews) makes you look like a bad goy- I mean idiot.

Based Defoe coming in with his best Adlibs.
A decent person in undecent times.
Hmm I didnt get any of this. What I got from that shot of him killing the POW was that the character had changed drastically from his experience in war. Its the same theme explored in Full Metal Jacket when "Joker" kills the girl at the end and the guys are singing Mickey Mouse.
War had changed these people from innocent kids into people that could kill and take lives.
That struggle of retaining your humanity and not letting it destroy you. Be careful when fighting monsters lest you yourself become one.
It was a different time
Kids a coward for killing a PoW to compensate for his bystander syndrome when he was really needed. Its like the beta cucks that beat up their pets to make up for the fact they won't fight their bullies in school.
they needed fucking warriors, not decent people
The USA had an army of civilians, they had no choice.
Then they probably shouldn't of forced Upham to fight
Hey guys Rob ayga hea. Something was off about the characta of oophum. He's a strahmahn to be shown as not a real mahn.
>germans looked like ugly skinheads from england
Rothstein brought everything on himself. She told him straight up she wasn't in love with him, he basically paid her to play the part.
So much this. The most horrific thing about this scene was the sound, when the knife stabs through the cloth of that soldiers uniform.
