Except ususally visual references are to something well known or iconic, not random Sony music compilations. People make references to call back to something, the value isn't in what is copied but in what is being referred to by the copying. These records don't look like something worth making a callback or allusion to for their own value, their only value is that they have nifty looking cover art, and copying that art for the sake of its niftyness isn't a reference, but just straight plagarism. What likely happened is some guy saw those records in his mom's attic, thought the design looked cool, and stole it for the posters he was designing because he was a lazy hack.
