The very power that he thought was irrelevant, because it could only be used to help others, now becomes pivotal to him acquiring the only thing he really wants, aside from becoming Emperor,- turning Anakin to the Darkside.
He needs the very skill he thought was completely useless, because it only helps others, to help him acquire the most powerful Jedi in the Galaxy. Ironic.
Even more ironic- not only did the promise of the possibility of this skill, which he thought was too useless to wait and learn from his master, exactly what he used to turn Anakin to the Darkside- it was also pivotol in him becoming Emperor as well; because of the Jedi coup which was only stopped by Anakins intervention.
The biggest irony is that everything Palpatine wanted was delivered to him by the promise of a skill that he never bothered to learn- helping others.

What one would not expect is that a person capable of performing CPR would actually have a heart attack, because they know how to prevent it.
