He's got his faults, yeah. Faults that are apparent and obvious right from the beginning of the series. But given the (very) extreme situation with his son being half alien and all, the fact that he is still a very big part in Stevens life is remarkable, if not the main reason he is actually a GOOD dad. Keep in mind that if it were up to the gems (especially Pearl), Steven wouldn't have any sort of human connections or, most likely, any sort of interaction to the human world. The human aspects of Steven, if you actually watch the show, are what have been really aiding/settling issues with the Gems.
Steven has his powers, but what really makes him unique is the human aspect, and that's all Greg

This is the same argument as a regular guy who works all the time and barely spends time with his family.
