It was never going to work after they replaced Demon in a Bottle with the lame dilemma of Tony being poisoned by his arc reactor which he fixed via technobabble and working through his daddy issues (while dodging the issue of his dad screwing over his old partner). That was the heart of the story and it didn't work.
