Am I the only one who thought this episode was complete trash? Here are two big observations I made:
1) There is ZERO subtlety anymore. Instead of respecting the audience's intelligence and letting us work out the themes ourselves, every single thing had to be stated out loud by the characters so even the dumbest viewer can get it. Why should be work out Beth's and Rick's relationships through their interactions when they can just narrate it to us like toddlers? Fucking Christ.
2) There is such a drive to shit on Jerry that it doesn't even make sense anymore. One of the goals in this episode was to get Jerry to admit he is sexist. HOW THE FUCK IS JERRY SEXIST? This came out of literally nowhere. The only interpretation in which this would make sense is if Summer were some ultra-progressive SJW. That's somewhat understandable, but then Morty agreed with her. Does Morty think his dad is sexist? Where the hell did this come from?
What the fuck happened?
Tyler Rodriguez
>Why should be work out Beth's and Rick's relationships through their interactions when they can just narrate it to us like toddlers?
"I'm my father!"
Jeremiah Carter
That's exactly what I'm talking about. Instead of letting us infer facts, they have to state it to us directly. "Rick is a bad person", "The good version of Rick only exists in Beth's mind", "Beth looked up to Rick and tried to imitate him", "Beth turned out exactly as messed up as Rick", etc.
There is no subtlety whatsoever. The only thing left up to interpretation is whether Beth was replaced by a clone or not, and honestly, who gives a shit?
Bentley Morgan
>no subtlety whatsoever
What show have you been watching? It wasn't exactly subtle in the first two seasons and any trace of that vanished with the premiere of the new season.
And yes, Summer is just an SJW. Morty agreed because, if you parse through her jargon, she's ultimately just saying that Jerry is a bad person.
Aaron Morales
Wasnt even canon
Isaiah Bell
Don't know what's your problem I think that this was a great episode. I think the interaction between Beth and Rick in this episode was great showcase that Beth is just as much of a uncaring selfish sociopath as her father. As for Jerry well his kids was calling him sexist because he was only using that alien chick to make Beth jealous he didn't really care about her. Turns out She was using him for the same purpose in the end.
Lincoln Carter
Harmons on meltdown i think. Someone said the writer wasnt even a girl and write some actually good episodes, so harmon must be rewriting the script and inserting as many tumblr buzzwords in as possible in an effort to get virtue points. He needs to be kicked off soon or the whole show could be shit by next season
Thomas Edwards
There is a difference between "some" subtlety and "not at all". The problem is we've reached the "not at all" level, and it's terrible. This episode and a few others this season felt like they were written by a different team.
Nolan Peterson
Only people who are barely intelligent give a fuck about people denying them the opportunity to "feel" intelligent.
And rick isn't a bad person similar to how a tornado isn't a bad animal.
Hudson Evans
>This episode and a few others this season felt like they were written by a different team.
Have you been paying attention? Many of them were. Tom Kaufman, Mike McMahan and Ryan Ridley are the only writers left from the old team. Oh, and Dan Guterman, but he only worked on The Ricks Must Be Crazy and Interdimensional Cable 2, so I don't really count him.
Cameron Mitchell
>Have you been paying attention? Obviously ou haven't, the statement here is that the quality of the episodes by the standards of previous seasons has decreased in a way that doesn't fit. We all know is the same team and the only change made are the inclusion of a few female writers, for which I honestly was ok with, because gender doesn't matter. What matters is the seemingly implied influence that this may have been, because since the second fucking episode of this season everything seems to have changed in such a way were I wouldn't blame you if you think is another politically heavied desicion that seems to control the media by pushing some women's (not all of them) egos into a projection of themselves that is painfully obvious and doesn't help the scipt or development of, in this case at least, shows.

What a sentence...I'm having trouble parsing your meaning.
I think we essentially agree, though, that the show doesn't feel the same anymore. I was just pointing out that there's an established reason for this--a changing roster of writers.
They didn't just add female writers; the likes of Eric Acosta, Wade Randolph, and two other men who worked on a single episode each in the second season didn't have a hand in the new season. I don't believe those second two authors are such a strong influence as to be missed, though. Besides that, Eric and Wade only worked (together) on two episodes in the first season.
My point? Yes, the show has changed. But is it the fault of the writers? I'm starting to think it's the fault of Dan and Justin.
Isaac Wright
>Rick and Morty >Subtlety
boy you're stupid. Tell me which was more subtle, the episode where Morty got raped by a sentient jelly bean, or the episode where Rick destroyed the world and just fucked off with Morty to a new world?
Adam Bell
Kinda got a bit pissed by Summer calling out/forcing Jerry to "admit" he's whatever it was. Obvious forced feminist agenda by the female writers...
Ayden Thomas
The ABCs of Beth was written by Mike McMahan.
A man who's been writing for the show since s1.
Andrew Collins
I'm someone else. I think the line was retarded. But not for, "it's an agenda" reasons.
I just think it's retarded because it's patently not true.
James Walker
they are making jerry confront his faults for a reason. i think they are heading to jerry becoming less of a loser and winning beth back.
Easton Cooper
Alright, guess I'm stupid and mad for no reason.
Ok episode, really lackluster overall though. I mean good story building but still.
Jack Edwards
>untrue Well yeah, it was Summer telling off her dad. That's why it was full of SJW buzzwords. She was just insulting him, really.
Jacob Campbell
I really disliked the episode, and depending on the finale I may drop the show.
Zachary Martin
Maybe.
Luke Cooper
Summer being chosen as a mouthpiece for the writers' opinions on Jerry doesn't seem likely to me. As I said earlier, Morty only agreed with her because she was essentially just saying, "You're a bad person."
Tyler Morgan
if they dont do anything with the Evil morty storyline by next week im dropping this show like a fucking rock
Kevin Wood
Worst episode of the season and the entire show.
Jack Turner
Well Summer's character has changed this season, making her a bit different than perhaps s1 or s2.
Elijah Richardson
What was up with the Reddit and fake news references, seemed pretty hamfisted to me, bad writing.
Luke White
Yeah, it felt pretty stale to me, too. I'm assuming it's a sad attempt to stay relevant? Considering how long we've been equating R&M fans with Reddit, it's almost surprising they've taken this long to mention it.
David Allen
i had to pause the episode after the "fake news" line and check to make sure the writer wasn't female
this episode just felt off. like completely different than anything else the show's been like
Julian Martinez
I think we were all too quick to assume that the female writers are the reason for the show's declining quality. They are not however the cause, but rather a symptom of the problem.
The show has simply lost its way. Justin, Dan, and the writers they kept (like Mike McMahan, who wrote this episode) have lost the magic that made the early show great.
That's why they hired new writers, they could feel themselves slipping.
Also related is the fact that prominent directors from the first season (Stephen Sandoval, John Rice, Jeff Myers) never returned. Am I the only one who thinks the second season was the beginning of the downward trend?
Ryder Taylor
No I agree, this episode sucked. The show has almost no cleverness anymore. Instead it's about dumb forced drama with throwaway science-fantasy plots. I thought the finale would be more substantial but apparently it's more half-assed bullshit.
We all just need to accept that season 1 was lightning in a bottle and the show will never be able to recapture that level of quality. It has nothing to do with "MUH WOMEN WRITERS" and everything to do with Roiland/Harmon blowing their loads early and running out of ideas. We already saw a sharp decline in season 2, season 3 is just continuing that trend. I hope they have the good sense to cancel the show but more than likely they're just gonna keep milking it. Season 4 will be even worse than this.
Nathan Hughes
>HOW THE FUCK IS JERRY SEXIST? This came out of literally nowhere. I swear you idiots don't even watch the damn show. You just let it play, only paying attention for things you can call a feminist or SJW conspiracy.
Then you make another Sup Forums bait thread bitching about the female writers.
Jason King
ok op.
Lucas Garcia
Your post is almost as lazy as season 3's writing.
Tyler Rodriguez
user, it's pretty fair to say there's more than one person who disliked it.
Hudson Cruz
Explain to me how Jerry is sexist.
Chase Bennett
isn't ruining the show after 1 or 2 seasons harmon's MO
maybe the mere presence of the female writers is having an effect
Eli Fisher
Agreed. Nothing stated this more than the ham-fisted shaming of Jerry by Summer.
I'll still watch, but only in ways that minimize their profits.
Hudson Allen

That's the thing. They are so alike, their self awareness and blunt, objective nature is what makes them "narrate" their relationship. They are both aware of how fucked up everything between them is and how closed of they are. It takes a dying man to get that stuff cleared up.
Caleb Scott
