My point exactly. The last week or so there's been a lot of idiots on the internet burning their NFL season tickets and their jerseys as well. They think they are protesting but they are just burning up their own money.

Aside from people not being nearly as keen on hamstringing the First Amendment as he was expecting there were some other issues:
First he was bitching about "flag burners" in specific when literally no one I knew could recall having ever seen an American actually burn one out of protest ( I'm sure someone did somewhere but it's not like we were all choking on the smoke or anything ).
The second being the more deeply embarrassing fact: "(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." sauce: usflag.org/uscode36.html
But it was the third that really hit home for me as a kid ( and goes to your point ): the American thing to do if some idiot wants to burn an American flag IS TO SELL THEM ONE!
