American politicians fuck it up by using their own interests. The goal should be youtalitarianism, the greatest good for the greatest number of people. If you target one demographic, you're truly not making an impact on a country unless it is a group that is negatively impacting the country. Politicians make promises that, while sometimes false, are true but not nearly as impactful as they make it seem. That seems to be the bulk of politics in general
It's not so much that the plans don't happen, it's that they were just talking points in the first place. Every candidate knows he can't fulfill all the promises he makes during his campaign and they don't even intend on doing so. Even Trump clearly just says things to get elected.

Hamilton is actually really important for American society. He pushed strongly for the idea of meritocracy instead of something that would have favored something closer to British aristocracy than we have currently.
Not to say we have a complete meritocracy by any means. The corruption and nepotism seen in Washington is proof of that. But Americans by and large still believe in the ideal of meritocracy. And when Americans complain about being screwed, even if they are incorrect in their analysis, they complain in terms of being denied a 'fair shot' or an 'equal opportunity' implying that they weren't given the chance to try and succeed and instead had failure thrust upon them. Even if their real complaint is based in just wanting something handed to them. It is important for the American value system that the normative 'good' is viewed as opportunity and not a guarantee of outcome.
Also Hamilton was big on paying our war debts. Lots of people in early America wanted to Welsh on the debts we owed due to the war. Hamilton was a strong advocate against that. This is critically important for America's success today. If you have ever bought a house you know that a good credit rating is quite valuable.
I mean so did Stalin and Mao. Doing what they think is best isn't a great rubric with which to grade a leader. The truth is FDR was a progressive, and he dramatically expanded the US government's reach and influence.
